Refurbishment, final touches....

Hope all is well.
The refurbishment seems to have entered its last phase. Although each week, I find something new to do!
Been really busy, with my daughter taking her grammar school exams, so working now on three fronts. I hope I will be able to repay or contribute something back. Hopefully my posts, as a newbie, has information for other newbies to start off.
So looks like the major work is done. Huge relief, compared to the place when it was torn down in May. As usual, have some minor things still pending, have enclosed some pics for advice
The cupboard /linen in the vestibule and landing are stacked with these wooden shelves. They are thick but look a little of poor quality. Can I paint them over ? Or sand them?

last yearThe attic was the most physically challenging job. I took down all the insulation and hoovered the place. In the process, found like a million rat droppings and also 3 blowouts in the felt.
Which I intend to repair next weekend. Will then replace the insulation in the next month or so.
Wonder if the flooring of the attic has asbestos, what is that white powder ?

last yearlast modified: last yearI managed to use a ladder and inspect the roof, from the outside. It does look grotty and full of moss. Any tips on how to clean this? I can get access to this side of the roof, but the reach on the other side of that chimney will have to climb over. With no one there to hold the ladder, will skip this one.
Maybe I could use a sprayer and spray something which will wash away the moss. Let the rains wash it away?
I can use a ladder and reach this part of the roof, spray it and then wipe it. The other side of the roof( from the chimney) will be hard to reach, max I can think of is to spray it and see it washes away

Comments (56)The trim in your rooms is outstanding. To "tie the rooms together", the one thing I would do is install chair rail the same color as the existing trim. The horizontal lines of chair rail will move the eye around the room and into the next room creating a flow. Comments (9)I hadn't spotted it was mahogany tbh when I first looked! I probably wouldn't go for a light wood with the mahogany, perhaps something medium in tone rather than mahogany just to balance out with the rest of the room? You could of course go for a different material for the console and add wood for accessories. For the bookcases I might actually paint them in the ŵall colour or the White otherwise they might overpower that area and the fire? Another option is to paint the actual fire surround. If you decided on blue for an accent colour for example you could paint it an Inky blue. It's quite hard to say without knowing what/if you'll bring colour to the rest of the room as you could end up with a living area dark in tone and everything else very light. The bookcases will also visually widen the living space so you may find you also need side tables for the sofa to balance it (or a chair angled in front of the bookcase if it fits) but perhaps see how it looks first before making any decisions! It still has some white powder-like residue? dry rot . Which is easy to wipe off and hoover, not wet and seems harmless
What can I do to protect this wood? Can I paint it? Or apply some oil or something?Previously I had sprayed it with an antifungal wash and then with Sikagard Universal 5star wood. It has made a difference but in some areas, there is still this white, dry powder-like substance
