Should I knock a wall down to make a kitchen/diner?

Hi everyone.
I've always wanted a kitchen diner and don't particularly want to move so wondered if knocking the wall through between the kitchen and dining room would be a good move? I'm on a corner plot so this means I effectively have two house "fronts" and so can't extend into the back garden to create a new space (the lounge backs onto the garden). If I did extend which door would I keep? That between the dining room and the hall or the kitchen and the hall, none, both?

Look into sliding pocket doors between the kitchen and the dining room to give you the best of both worlds.

Take your plan to somewhere like Howdens and get them to design it for you, my sister in law did that and between the designer and her she has a really great living dining kitchen now, plus, she got all the units in the sale and the worktops from somewhere else at a great price. It took a while, but it has been worth it, she asked at Howdens if they knew any people to do the job too. Of course, your local Howdens might not be as helpful, but I would start there. Just avoid Wren, I know someone who had a really dreadful experience with them, its worth checking Which for advice. Having said all this, I think your present kitchen looks great and personally I’d leave things as they are, don’t forget there is a Cost of Living Crisis!

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire

Hi minnie101, Thanks so much for your detailed reply. Great to know what colour that grey is. It may be a little dark with our floor. We will definitely update the handles - I hate the current ones. We'll probably go with wood to keep within budget. Your non-tiles pic is lovely. We'll probably keep some tiles and try to keep the kitchen a little more modern than country kitchen, which might be a challenge with wood. The room faces south. I like your idea of dividing it with paint. We probably will go with white in the kitchen and then 1/2 slightly darker tones in the tv-couch area. The 'other' entrance into the dining area is narrowed by a non-structural wall, so we should remove this to open it properly or like you say, close it off. Maybe not close it off entirely as we'd lose a lot of light, but maybe put in a counter or breakfast bar if space allowed. I love your pendant light suggestions over the dining table. Details like this and a rug in the couch area will really help divide the room as at the moment it is one big cavernous space. I really can't decide yet what way the couches should face - into a tv in the corner, or out into the room like you suggest. We'll have to draw out some chalk outlines on the floor and see how much space there actually is. Colour-wise we like the idea of keeping walls and cabinets quite stark, the wood counter will add a bit of warmth, and then adding colour with couches, rugs and possibly dining chairs. I've attached a couple of pieces of furniture I like. Some may not work, but we'll figure it out.

Hi Divechick, No i love the layout, the kitchen is a good layout for using the dishwasher, fridge and cooker all close by., We have our plates and bowls in drawers which i love too.One thing we do need is more storage though. We are looking at knocking through to next room next year so the whole room will be wider and incorporate a utility. I think i will keep the general kitchen layout the same though but add more presses!

I did just that a few years ago. Our wall wasn’t load bearing so we took it down ourselves, bit by bit. Our room is still kitchen one end and dining the other but more cohesive. I’m not quite sure how to configure the doors, but maybe close off dining one, keeping the hall and entering kitchen at that door? Your kitchen looks in good nick but if the wall is removed carefully it might work with little hardship.
