Another long living/dining room thread

I have seen several threads here about how best to furnish a long living & dining room. I am faced with a similar problem as I am moving into a house that has a long through lounge, with the additional dilemma of the location of the entrance door into the lounge and a small corner behind the cloak room. Picture of the floorplan and how the current owners have furnished it are attached. To be honest, the current setting looks very inefficient.

In the long run, I was thinking of knocking down the cloak room to add it to the living room, however one of the pillars will stay as it supports the upper story. I would be grateful for any suggestions about how best to utilise the living room space with sofas and a small dining table.

There's scope for extension of the house as well, into the garden, but that's not something I would invest into right away.

Hi - i would keep the small cupboard - it would be so useful to hide all the coats, umbrellas, etc. so your entrance hall can be clutter free to make a good first impression as you enter the house. I would see if you could remove the walls dividing the kitchen and living room (or even most of them if not all) and that would make the space work better. good luck!

I would be inclined to keep the cloakroom as it is always useful, put a wall back across to make a separate snug and then see how much of the back walls you can take out to make it open plan along the back of the house, having the entrance to it at the end of the corridor

Hi, thanks for your comment. I totally agree - I actually have a large art print on order (vertical/ portrait orientation) and that will be replacing the mirror when it arrives. From previous comments I received everyone seems have different opinions on sofa choices but I think I'm pretty happy with the L shape one I've gone with - it fits the space a lot better (I think!) than the 3 & 2 seaters I previously had. I contemplated going with a different lighter sofa colour but practicality won in the end!

It seems to me that the room can be divided into three distinct areas. TV area where the TV is now, office area by placing a nice desk and a chair along the window at the other end. And another sitting area across from the fireplace by using two love seats or two comfortable chairs perpendicular to the fireplace with a coffee table in the middle. Provided that the dimensions allow for that.

Thank you for commenting. I was hoping to place double doors /pocket doors between the kitchen and living room that I could open or close off particularly in the depths of winter. I like my heat. Doing that leaves me with less wall space for kitchen units particularly the American style fridge freezer but something has to give. The back wall of the house opens/or rather doesn't open to the garden at the moment but I would like it to do so. So nothing unusual here, I just want a kitchen /diner / utility that opens onto the garden for outside entertainment, but I think my main struggle is with the length and narrowness of the room. I'm finging it really hard to visualise a functional working space.

That's a very interesting idea Susy Q. I hadn't thought of dividing the through lounge by erecting a wall in there. When you say having the entrance to it at the end of the corridor, which corridor do you refer to? If I keep the cloakroom, the only entrance into the open plan lounge could be through the new wall from the snug room.

Can it go through where the blue mark is by removing that cupboard? It just means you can hopefully have a living area that isn’t also a corridor

My drawing skills aren’t the best but this is plan I found on the internet (opposite way round to your house) that should give a rough idea of what I mean
