paint colour scheme for north facing snug

Hi we are redesigning the ground floor of our house and have split the living room to provide a tv/family /snug at the front which is north facing. It measures 3.6m x 4.5m The new media wall is the 4.5 side. At present we have a jumble of furniture in there and the existing curtains and carpet which will all be changed. Any minute now the builders will start asking about paint colours so looking for help from the wealth of experience on here! The door opens into the hall and windows front of the house.

Are you planing to keep the sofa in red? If so your colour choice might have to blend in or compliment this.

Hi no we don’t plan to keep it so we have a clean palette to work with. Only item staying is the bureau

I have some suggestions, but none are cream tone. IMO, North facing rooms, because there is so little sunlight, need warmth which most light colors do not give for the chilly North room. BM Leapfrog accented with Asian blue and whites; BM Goldtone accented with cream and a painted blue ceiling; BM Slip accented with white and a really dark green velvet fabric.

WRm pale grey for north facing room

To be honest I would be very careful with grey or anything with grey tones. We moved house last July and painted our lounge in FB elephants breath. In the north facing room it was very grey and sucked the life out of the room. We had to change it - very depressing. We have now used a paint from Little Greene - the paint quality is so much better than FB. Our decorator agrees. They might have a nice grey - but please be very sure of how it will look in your room!

Our living room is a cosy size, about 15x15. It has a large window on one wall, fireplace on the opposite (will be a cream cast iron traditional style fireplace). I was thinking of painting it a very mellow sage green but am at a loss with what curtains to put in.

repainting a bedroom ..have blush pink headboard and want to use grey on walls to make it more grown up and not to feminine...North facing room ..ceilings a decent height ... picture rail ...Also have to paint a triple door pine wardrobe so was thinking to paint same colour as walls to help it disappear a bit....

It might depend on when you are going to use it? What type of flooring you want (expensive and can't be changed liek carpet), what style/colour sofa etc. Paint is cheap relatively and easy to change so I would start with the sofas, flooring.

In general terms, poorly lit rooms can feel flat and a bit foggy. This means more contrast or warmer neutrals or stronger colours can be a good idea.

As you can see we have a media wall built in and will mainly use it in the evenings as a snug/tv room. I have seen some rooms like this painted in dark blue but I know it needs to be the right shade with warm undertones. But how would I know which had warn undertones ?!

A deep blue will always feel warmer than a pastel or pale blue but it's all relative, a greyed pink could feel warmer than a deep blue, it's complex . Personally, I am really sensitive to light and so I avoid overly dark spaces but I do have a deep wall where my TV is to hide it (Green Smoke). I took colours from this painting and used neutrals, bronzes, browns and wood to create a balance of warm/cool. In terms of lights and darks, I would think about a light floor/rugs if you are going deep on the walls.

This is my TV wall. I'm not particularly a fan of 'feature walls' unless there is a purpose to them such as angles that are set back and disguising things such as TVs.

I would choose all the furniture first, then you can choose the wall colour and accessories to go with it. Get furniture/floor swatches so you can use them to help you choose. Colourhappy’s Green Smoke is beautiful. I wonder how you feel about a warm dusky pink? I don’t mean Barbie Pink, but something dirtier. Or a pale sage green. Quite a cool colour but rather lovely.
