Over our kitchen island (2.6m long) we were going to put in 3 pendants, and we have a hob on the island. This will have a down draft extractor, but I still think the pendants will get dirty and greasy. However, I do think they’ll be a great addition to the room!
Does anyone have anything similar and could advise on if it’s worth it?! Thank you.
I have the same dilemma. Our island will be just over 2.4m long with the 80cm hob and pop up downdraft. I would also like three pendants but haven't decided yet. Have you made up your mind?
Pendants over an island are fantastic for mood and task lighting - as long as you maintain your extract system regularly they should clear most of the steam/moisture but you will occasionally need to clean the lighting so ensure it is easily removable etc. Be careful with glass over the food area just in case of an accident. Our wrought iron pendants are available with a hardwearing lacquered finish and we offer LED bulbs with a 5 year warranty to go with them.
While acknowledging that, over time, any lights in proximity to your hob will become dirty, for many designs it works well.
Selecting the right pendant is key - there are some stunning options where the led bulb is essentially fully embedded into the acrylic & metal of the fitting with minimal seams or places for grease to build up.
A "fussy" fitting with lots of nooks, crannies, seams & surfaces is less appropriate for such a purpose.
