Painting advice… slopped ceilings

Hi everyone,

I’ve just moved into a top floor apartment and it has a lot of interesting slopped ceilings, which I love, but I’m unsure how to paint it.

The previous owners created a line where a traditional ceiling would be, which I don’t personally like.

So I think my options would be to…
A) paint the walls and ceiling the same colour: but would this create too small a space?

B) put a dado rail of some sorts (a nice one!) where the walls meet the ceiling to create an interesting divide: but would this be too much white space?

I’d like consistency throughout the rooms, so what I do in one room I’d like to match throughout.

I want the apartment to feel cosy, so I’m probably going for warmer, rich paint colours, but I don’t want it to feel small.

A lot of inspiration I’ve seen online are for places that are an interesting shape, and a bit more architecturally thought-out. Sadly I’m in a new-ish build where they have just built what they need to!

Would love to hear what others think, and any suggestions as I’m new to the world of painting my rooms after years of renting!

We have a bathroom we’ve just had done, which has a lot of different angles and slopes around the window. Its changed from the old dark green walls and white ceiling which was here when we bought the house, to our new look, which is a Crown copy of F&B Strong White, painted on ceiling and walls. The light coming in from the window still makes the colour change on all the different walls, but painting them all the same has lessened the emphasis on the slopes, but retained interest.

Also wanted to add, early stages but the colours I’m thinking of going for so far are: Aquamarine from Little Greene (Living Room), Coral Pink from Dulux Heritage (Kitchen), Celestial Blue from Little Greene (Bedroom). So when I say rich colour, I don’t mean deep, I guess I just mean more colourful than neutral shades haha

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.

Painting living room with high ceiling

Im hoping for some advice on paint colours for a living room/den that has high pitched ceiling. The house is a new build. Modern barn aesthetic. We are thinking about a different colour in the den to make it feel cosy as the rest of the house will be off white + oak. Are there rules of thumb I should follow? Should the walls and ceiling be painted the same or should I leave ceiling white? Are there different rules when the ceiling is high? The pic shows the dimensions of the den. Both windows go floor up to where the ceiling starts to slope up. Pitch is 45deg. We will a TV on the wall where the SS is and brown leather couch facing Thanks Marcus

Choosing Living Room Paint Colours

I have a large rectangular living room / music room which is two rooms in one. The living room is South West Facing and the Music room is North East facing. I am thinking of painting the walls White Tie by Farrow and Ball and the skirtings and door frame Matchstick. One problem is the window frame and sills are white UPVC. The ceilings are 8ft high so have opted for a pure, brilliant white ceiling. The dado rail is going and all the furnishings will be neutral with black piano and fireplace. I would appreciate any advice here and thanks!

I personally like what they have done. I think your bathroom and kitchen would be better the same colour but otherwise I could stick with how they have done it. A dado rail sounds a bit dated.

I agree I like how they’ve done it, except the bedroom window, I would fill in the white bit with the wall colour you choose. Dads rails are fab in period properties but look a bit naff with modern decor. Really like your choice of colours and Celestial Blue is my favourite colours ever! Haven’t used it yet. Such a lovely apartment.

Thanks both! These weren’t the answers I was hoping for 😂 but you have opened my eyes! Maybe it’s the beige I don’t like haha. Those were my thoughts on a dado rail too…. Why wouldn’t you suggest painting it all the same colour? X

Firstly, congrats on moving into your own home. I love all the angles too, you will get interesting shadows and reflections. My instinct would be to paint all one colour, I might even go for white everywhere (which isn’t my usual choice). I think this would emphasis the angles and slopes because of the shadows which will move and deepen through the day. It would also be much easier to paint, the previous owner must have used reams of masking tape. Look at articles about the 70/30 or 60/30/10 design principle for balancing colour and texture across a whole room and then go to town with bold patterned rugs, unframed pictures, textured throws, bed linen to give you balance against all the white.
You could have fun with wall decals, running them up onto the slopes.
Just one last design tip to help you in your amazing new space. The slopes are at varying angles so it is more harmonious not to have strong geometric shapes nearby. As an example, there is a large black rectangular framed grid of photos by the fireplace in the agents photo which is very geometric. Imagine them displayed in an ergonomic group without framing. All this is just my opinion but I’m sure you’ll make this space your own with your own individual style, good luck

I just said I liked how it was painted, but you could go one colour all over. Personally soft pastel shades would work well I feel, but deeper shades can also work but will create a different look, Your colour suggestions sound good. Here’s some rooms one colour all over. Difficult to find angled ones.

Rooms with lots of angles will cast shadows everywhere. For this reason I would opt for all over colour (plus the ceilings looks quite low). If using all over colour I would avoid too dark and go for neutrals that lean towards the colours you like. The more light it gets, the more white you can go, the more dingy it is, go warmer. I think it actually looks really nice at is it is, I would move in and seem how it feels, 'feel' is always the best starting point.

I’m interested in this post as am currently having bathroom renovated and the ceiling is mainly a slope. I think I’ll paint ceiling white as shower tiles will be white and rest of room in Elephant’s Breath as that works with floor tiles and cabinet and loo seat. I feel if it were all one colour it might look like a cave as room naturally dark. I can post before and after pics if that might help your decision LJ?

In case anyone else comes across this post whilst doing research I thought I’d share some ‘after’ pics.

I’m now a big fan of painting the ceiling same colour as the walls for slopped ceilings - would definitely recommend it. I’m really happy with how it’s turned out and it has made a bit difference to the rooms as your eye isn’t drawn to dividing line.

Meant to add - if you’re in a smaller space you might want to stick to lighter colours (like the bedroom) as it does make the room feel smaller. However I did my spare room in F&B Rangwali, during a moment of painting madness haha, and I love how it came out.. It makes the room feel super cosy.
