Dark Blue kitchens trend to a end? should I go for something else?

Hi all
We have been planning our house extension/renovation for the last 5 years (!!) and we are finally on the construction phase.
I always wanted and planned from the start to have a dark blue kitchen (think F&B stiffkey blue).

But it is now everywhere and at least 3 of my friends have had a dark blue kitchen installed in the last 2 years.

I know I should follow my heart, it is my house bla-bla-bla 😉

But I am concerned that dark blue kitchen trend is at it’s peak and will soon start decline. And I am concerne that our brand new kitchen (costing us £££!) will be very soon out of date and be perceived as a 2010’s kitchen (even if it will be installed in the 2020’s!).

I am not sure what to do…
I don’t know which other color to choose.

Our plan is to have the main units in grey (Purbeck stone F&B) and the island in blue (Stiffkey Blue F&B) so if I replace the blue, I am not sure what else to put…

Happy to get views on color trends and other color to consider!

Good taste is always in fashion, I always think that Friends (TV) don't look dated even though they're 90s because they were dressed nicely.

So as long as it's done with taste, go for it.

Alternatively, I love Little Greene's website because they are so helpful at the weird and wonderful colours that go with each other. Obsidian green is a lovely colour on a similar theme as stiffkey blue but on the green spectrum.

If it is what you like and want then have it.

Dove grey has been very popular for many years now and some people have said it’s had it’s day but it is still a popular choice and a big seller.

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

It looks very good James. Even though as you say it was a clients design build, it works fine. Once the Island has stools it will fill it out better. Has that naked look at the moment. The position of the wine rack might cause issues but overall it looks like a really clean and fresh kitchen. Plenty of natural light and the colours compliment each other. The extractor is a nice feature too. Everyone has different opinions as I see on here but if the client is happy with it then job done. Looks really well fitted too.....well done :)

In the main I agree with Patricia. I would move the dining table to the living area, move the living area to the kids room, move the island a little more to the right so it is just a little more over than the width of the entrance walkway, at the moment it is more to the left and almost interrupts the entry flow enough to keep catching your self on the edge, with the table moved it will allow this, plus there may be enough room for more storage on the right hand wall decorative or practical and naturally shallower than standard depth, consider what it would be used for then you can make an informed decision on depth. The island sink and bin are not far from the tall unit pantry and fridge, so no I don't think they are to far away, whatever you get from these places are to be opened probably by the sink or bin, or opened to eat from the packaging. Also why would you have a log burner and an aga in the same room unless your aga is an electric one? They both give of tremendous heat, an aga is constant and unless you have planned for other oven types it will be year round so summer as well, as Patricia mentioned bare in mind how the sun transits your house, where it's position is when you will be in these areas which I'm guessing will be most of the time. I know plenty of people who gave had " improvements revamps etc" to their kitchen dining living spaces with plenty of regrets, loads of glass to bring the outside in, underfloor heating and an aga, the underfloor heating is switched off you can't zone it to where you want it, and the aga gives of to much heat with the glass combined, all the hard surfaces, no acoustics were considered by the so called "architects" sound is a problem too, something else to consider, someone else had to have some of their new kitchen change to make room for an air conditioning unit because of the heat, this is very expensive to run constantly, summers are almost unbearable, these things also affect materials being used such as leather and wood drying out and cracking/splitting. A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

Natural wooden kitchens are coming back into vogue, Scandi style. As Jane says, if you tire of it you could always get it painted. If you go to Stories there’s a whole article on wooden kitchens.

There's no easy answer to this. Seeing lots of similar things on social media is a short cut to making decisions, it takes the hard work out if it and so it becomes a 'trend'. But most recent articles include virtually every possible colour combination you can think of. Timeless is always good as it won't date, but trends will, but so what if you like it? Make a pinterest board for all the kitchen colours you love to see it there is something that links them. If it's only an island, it could be repainted in the future? I think the thing is to go easy on all of the trendy items in one place, maybe keep some aspects classic.

I think a trend for dark green kitchens is definitely replacing dark blue. It feeds in to the trend for biophilic interiors. Wood kitchens are also trending for the same reason.

I would definitely go for something which can be painted - so something wood rather than wrapped. The extra cost might hurt now but it means it can be updated in the future.

I think overall trends are moving on faster, and minimalism is being replaced by maximalism which is more exciting and fun but also possible to get bored of more quickly.

I have some green in the house - our playroom will be painted Beetle Jewel (Little Green) which is a deep vibrant dark green (I have been in loved with this color for the last 5 years! I can't wait to have it on our walls!)

Maybe I should consider it for the kitchen...

Cabinet units are indeed painted wood - so I can still have them repainted; but I would prefer to avoid having to do it for several years :)

I was thinking about this C D. My favourite kitchen I have seen in the last few years is this...I think the overt cool colours of the last few years have now shifted, certainly in terms of instagram, warmth is everywhere. I love this because of the contrast between the warm walls, the limestone and the cooler deep green units. It doesn't look trendy, you wouldn't be able to definitively say when it was installed, it looks timeless. I'm pretty sure the walls are Sand and the floor is something like Blue Limestone (Mandarin Stone sell). Maybe this would be an option, to mix things up a bit in terms of temperature.

I just had dark green kitchen installed and everyone comments what a lovely colour it is (on my husbands zoom calls). He wanted blue but I said it was over it’s peak too (and I like to be different to friends 😀)

I think if you really want a dark blue kitchen go for it and dont think to much about trends. Your home has to resonate with you and make you happy regardless of trend. You can take the blue to another level by mixing up the cabinet furniture and worktops, even the colour you put on the wall and going for something that s a little less predictable, like the picture below……

Lisa/Colorhappy - do you know the color name of the paint on the kitchens you shared? They are lovely :)

I still not sure if we will go for green or blue - but it really make me think... Maybe!

HI C D the unit colour is LIttle Greene Obsidian Green 216. The wall colour may be from the Little Greene Sand or Clay range. You could always email the designer - Gary Meakin Studio.

Just two comments that may or may not be helpful.

1. Dark blue absorbs light - I painted some cupboards in a utiltiy with F&B’s Hague Blue and it made the room seem quite dark.

2. If you don’t want your kitchen to date, don’t use something that’s become a trend. If you like blue - and who doesn’t? - choose a blue that’s a bit different. This kitchen is lovely. https://www.houzz.co.uk/hznb/photos/kitchen-phvw-vp~172154113

I would go for the colour you love now, then in a few years once you have had enough of them change the doors for a different colour that compliments the end panels, just buy from the same company you got the original kitchen from, that’s what we plan to do. Ours our handless Matt dark grey from Ikea they are easy to clean and stains do come off with hot soapy water. We have had them since 2019 and still look as good today as the day they went in.

We actually went to Howdens this Saturday and asked them about "color trends".

They told us that the vast majority of kitchens they installed are still grey (light or middle tones). Dark blue is the next color they sell, with people usually using it on the island, rather than "full blue kitchen".

Green is really just starting (they only have 1 dark green option vs 3/4 for dark blue) but they feel it will be the next trend.

We discussed with my partner and we are getting quite interested in green. However he wants very dark green (almost black) and I would prefer a more "jewel"/mid tone type, but I am sure we will find a compromise :)

We think Black kitchens are huge at the moment, not saying that people are coming away navy or green. But black kitchens, complementing it with chrome, rose gold or gold furnishings can really give a sophisticated sleek look to the kitchen. You can change the furnishings with a black kitchen whenever you feel you need to change it up again.

I think it's important to compare when trends begin to when there is a surpless of items to sell in showrooms. The grey trend began to end around 5 years ago (anyone who is on social media would have seen this) but the large quantitiy of grey tiles, kitchens, carpets etc etc are still sitting in warehouses today and therefore need ot be sold. Grey will never go out of fashion, but grey everything will. Ultimately, it's down to rejecting fashion. Lots of companies such as paint companies try to push their green credentials, but they then push the whole concept of 'Colour of the Year' etc and constantly talk about trends. Maria Killam on instagram and Tiktok has done some very blunt and truthful posts about trends to avoid, and how to opt for timeless interiors in order to avoid wasting money. The other side of the arguemtns is that making a house really trendy, can in some instances add a huge amount of value if you're lucky enough to sell at the right time. There's no easy answers!

I’d say yes, it will start to decline. However, I feel like you can have the best of both worlds. Add a dash of blue to a small area of your kitchen, the rest can be a combination of black, grey and white. I’m not an expert, but this looks good to me in my head. Saturn Interiors are amazing kitchen fitters in northampton who are known for some of their phenomenal designs. You should get a consultation call with them!

I do like that blue, what specific colour is it? And is it spray or hand painted? How long did it take to do the units from prep to completion? (sorry for so many questions!) I have a large kitchen which was originally oak, then painted cream, and is due for a refresh in the next 12 months. I' ve no idea which gives the best and most hardwearing finish.
