Please help me identify and fix this stain....

I appreciate it looks like something rude but I assure you it isn't that! I live on my own and that has absolutely not happened on the couch! I've put the cover in the washing machine and scrubbed it with upholstery foam but it isn't budging. Out of desperation I coloured it in with a black pen then realised that was stupid and washed it out and it washed right out with a hand sponge. So maybe this is a case of the colour has been leached rather than a stain? Thanks so much for any help! Katie :)
