Paint Removal from Exterior brickwork mechanically

Hi,

The exterior of my house had layers of paint covering the brickwork. I have removed it with PeelAway but have been left with a grey layer, I think it was cement based paint that will not come off. I cannot remove it with a power wash or sand blast as the bricks are not good enough ( a person on my street done this and the bricks are very damaged. Does anyone know the best type of head i get for a drill or some machine to remove it and get the bricks smooth?

You can get wire brush connections for standard drills, one for an angle grinder is better if you have an angle grinder.

Although a wire brush on a drill won't be any more gentle than a jes wash will it?

Ask in BandQ or screwfix etc ref the brush for drill and what you want if for and they'll sort you out. Most drills are common in terms of bit connection but maybe take a photo of drill chuck before you head to the shop in case they ask. Generally standard and SDS, but might as well have a photo pre taken ὄDὄD

Definitely art deco. This is a hard one. From houzz pictures, it looks as though you could extend the Juliet floor out and then add a roof but a builder would have to figure that one out. You could have another roof line on the side and have your porch there and access it from inside, which might turn out even better as you would have a great summer entertaining spot. Have you put in Art Deco in exterior photos? Great ideas.

I have a tile roof, and they make going mod kind of difficult, but they do add charm.With the sort of earthy color scheme i posted before, you could paint the bricks with masonry paint in a paler tone like sw ancient marble or wash them with a more grayed green so they add taupe tones if you do the chimneys the same - but really, the color resonates with the roof, so use it as color inspiration. Look at 100 year old homes with lines like this and their window mullions - if the upper elements and sides of the larger picture window had muntins / grilles, they would be more charming. Still, you are aiming at retro farmhouse with the muntins, not necessarily authentic historic . . but that gives you some concept about how to go and search for inspiration. You don't have to tear out the entire ramp - could widen "pad/porch" to left and put stairs right down the front depending on car park / depth to roadway design - have your ramp and stairs and just take off the old handrail too . . great for universal design when selling tho railing is not attractive.

You can leave the handrail the same distance from the wall as it is now. Leave it connected to the newel post at the top; remove the newel post at the bottom, and add what's called a 'return' to anchor the bottom end to the wall. Then add a couple of brackets going up the stairs. The challenge is that the return should match the profile of the handrail, in order to blend, but check at the home center or a lumber yard/mill to see if you can match it (take measurements/drawings/close-up photos, etc.). As for painting the stairs--be careful with "fun" graphics. The treads and risers need to be clearly defined and regular. For example, a plaid or check that doesn't match the tread and riser exactly at each step is a trip hazard and may not meet building codes. People need to be able to see the treads clearly even without paying attention to them. Walking is an unconscious activity and we need to make it as easy as possible. Confusing patterns are a menace. In NYC, they put new edges on treads on one stairway at one train station that were designed to make them less slippery. However, they also made it more difficult to discern the edge of the tread. In 6 weeks, more than 1,400 people fell down those stairs. Then they redid them. Over 90% of injuries on stairs happen during descent. I highly recommend Bill Bryson's great book 'At Home--A Short History of Private Life'. The NYC anecdote above came from Chapter 14--'The Stairs'. Fascinating and amusing book. My house is 100 years old, so I feel your pain dealing with the changes and additions that happened over time.

Just consider that if previous they applied a layer over may be due to brick quality and absorb too much humidity?
