*very* bespoke under stair storage
Hi everyone,
We have an open space under our staircase in our dining room. The dining room is open plan with the kitchen and living room. There's another door from the hallway which we've currently blocked off.
There is 0 storage anywhere in the house (72m2 in total) and we've rigged a temporary under-stairs storage solution which needs to house - shoes, seasonal coats, bags in regular use, and the dog's stuff. This is a massive improvement from our previous "pile everything on the dog's crate" solution and cost maybe £30 in total but is obviously lacking - we still have nowhere to put our hoover, mops etc., and it's right in the middle of our beautiful living area.
How can we make this more efficient and beautiful? A properly built in solution would have to work around the dog's crate which seems like it would be so bespoke that it would detract from the appeal of the house.
We've considered hanging a nice floaty linen curtain with some fairy lights, hanging plants etc. Would this look good or naff? And how might it work with the sloping ceiling?
What else could we be looking into?
Our budget is approx 1 shoestring but we would invest in the perfect solution

Comments (2)You could do a built in shelf under the stairs on the wall and put kids books and small toys on it. I would add a small wooden rocking chair so your little one can sit under there and read and play. A tiny area rug would work too....See Morespace organization ..... i need some idea
Comments (7)I agree with maikola, turn under the stairs into storage. Maybe combine with a little desk for when the kids are older. I'd swap your dining and living area around. Have the tv on the long left wall with a small sofa a couple of feet in front of the doors and one opposite the tv. It does look as if a 5ft table would fit in the kitchen though? If you don't want to fill too much of the kitchen space consider a bench one side for you to use with chairs for the kids on the other. Comments (3)Empty out the furniture and fixtures there, including the lamp and ceiling fixture.Use a storage bench instead for a place to sit and remove shoes. Shoes or backpacks can be dropped inside it. You can get much better lighting from a fixture that has lights to wash the ceiling and to light the floor. What is under your stairs? Do you have room to install some storage there? Pull out stair drawers might work for shoes, and you might add some pull outs under the stairs if they are suited for it. A foyer should serve to introduce you, your style and the decor to be expected in the adjoining rooms. I would key furnishings and paint to what is going on in the rooms left and right of the foyer. Everything I see hanging on the walls is hung too high. The general rule is that the center point of a single piece or a grouping should be 5' above the floor. If the first piece at the bottom of the stairwell is hung at that level, you can use painter's tape to tape the center line all the way up the stairs and arrange pictures above and below the line, with a few centered right on it for a more pleasant arrangement. Comments (31)Thanks Decoenthusiaste! Yes that sofa is unavailable here and hard to find anything similar in local stores, but I may have one made up! So yes I’m using the images you post as inspiration and hope to find similar items here, I also love the grey Scandanavian sofa ideas you had earlier, and will use them as inspiration to get a lighter replacement. The blind on my window is screwed in place, but I could easily replace it with something that would let in more light, like the top down blinds (which are new to me!). I’m really glad no one has thought the absence of curtains an issue, as light is scarce here & I prefer the no curtains look. I do agree we should move the car to another part of our drive to get a nicer view out. A radiator cover that could double as a shelf would work well I think, I love the bespoke one, how cool! Also good to find out that you can get ones that allow the heat to rise. Re the music centre, I might replace with an iPod doc with speakers as Glo kindly suggested, In meantime I might cover it (and the dreaded TV!) with a piece of framed art leaning from the floor, aware that’ll be another competing focal point, but hopefully a nicer one! last yearThe simplest solution is to put doors on the area. I would put the dog crate elsewhere as that is making it difficult to find solutions. Do you need a dog crate - is it a puppy? Stuff that can be seen never looks tidy. Is there someone in your household who can use a saw and attach some hinges? You could make MDF or wooden flat fronted doors which can be painted white. Even getting a carpenter to make the doors shouldn’t cost a fortune, but obviously a bit more than a shoestring. The curtain could work short term but I’m not sure about the lights. You don’t really want to draw the eye there. Here’s a couple of flat fronted door ideas, one painted and the other natural.

last yearEcho what others have suggested with built-in cupboards. If you’re handy, grab some 2x2 and plywood or MDF sheets and knock them up yourself.
