Help with decorating ideas. Why is it here?

I'd like to ask if anyone has seen this type of thing before and how would you decorate around it. Our house is late 1920's . I'd like to add stair panelling however this piece of wood has me stumped as to how to work around it. I feel like it's something to do with the floor joists on the adjacent wall? The staircase has an odd thing too, where the bannister has been trimmed to fit as if the staircase was too wide when installed (not shown) When we redecorated the kitchen we had to remove a piece of the picture rail to install cabinets, it was literally built into the wall with huge wedges of wood mortared in place. I have a feeling this piece shouldn't be moved. Thought about building the wall out around it with wood or drywall to try and make it flush but it's quite a deep piece of wood so it would cause the skirting board to be pushed out beyond the edges of the door frames. Have a feeling I'm going to have to live with it and just do the same paper or paint as is. Can you think of a way to make it better, or a way of disguising it it? Thanks in advance.

Personally I think the wall was over boarded because the ledge on the top of the picture rail in the hall is quite deep.

For this reason I should remove it

Thanks for the explanation. Try a wall that is drawers up to waist high, cupboards above that. YOu can add pull-out cutting boards at waist height so that you can put things there when unpacking groceries and putting things away in the cabinets and drawers: Drawers will help but they will not increase storage space by a factor of two. You could also add drawers where the microwave is now and continue to keep the microwave on top. Here is another wall of wood cabinets: Although it will not solve your storage problem, I recommend that you pull everything out of the cabinets and drawers, one drawer or shelf at a time. Be flexible about storing things elsewhere while the children are very small. Or discarding "aspirational cooking" implements (egg slicers, orange zesters, martini shakers. lobster-shaped gelatin molds) that just haven't been used in years. Families with children tend to accumulate an enormous amount of plastic stuff. In six months or a year, they will need different plastic stuff!

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

i was going to say tapestry or a glass mirrored effect, as well haha. or just a large painting that you will love to look at. your chandelier is very nice, but i've seen many with that kind of entrance, that they have those really long, pendent lighting, for a dramatic effect. but i'm thinking, you don't want to change that. or a giant clock. or one of those wall stickers. or animal heads haha. few ie attached

Take out sofa, use beanbags and those blow up seats for their friends. Coloured rugs for tumbling and crawling on. Supersoft teddy bear blankets so they can curl up. Add in one of those soft blanket boxes for toy storage and so you have somewhere soft to perch when you are with them. Paper half way up the wall in the wall paper that kids can draw on, so they can decorate in whatever colour they like and you won't mind. A childs lift up desk, bookcase and some crazy lamps in weird colours. Then close the door, collapse on the sofa that you have moved, breathe a sigh of relief and thank your lucky stars that you have another room for the kids to go to. (Grab wine and pretend they aren't yours for half an hour! ;-) )

As you can see, the upper part is not flush with the top stair/floorboard but lower, more in line with the floor joists. I suppose taking up a floorboard next to the bedroom wall may allow a peek where the wall and floor joists meet.

I would have guessed that it would be more of a ‘decorative’ item and not ‘structural’?! I can’t imagine the vertical piece is going to be tied into anything in the wall. I wonder if the picture rail you were talking about in the kitchen was originally constructed that way to tie into the brickwork for support when old heavy pictures were hung from it??

We had this on our stairs so took it off. Just decorative but did rip part of the wall out with it so had to put some filler in.

I am wondering like was said here that is decorative, but associated with boards to receive the silky wall paper. Where boars join they would have placed the timber to hide the expanding gap? Even the scocia above the staircase skirting doesn't look same age, not sure.

Remove it. It’s really not nice and will prevent you from decorating it nicely.
