Colour advice - furniture painting

Hello! I'm not the most creative person and I'd really welcome your advice and suggestions on the colour for renovating a piece of furniture I rescued from going to the tip. It's a cocktail cabinet with a nice interior and some side cupboards too. It's great as a piece of furniture, but it's damaged and could do with some TLC. A friend suggested black gloss. What would your suggestions be?

I really like it as it is. It has that trendy Art Deco vibe.

I agree with Sonaia. Stripped and limed maybe? Is it to go with the floor, because the floor is quite cool looking and the cabinet is very warm.

Hi I notice your blind and lamp are Laura Ashley Pelham. Laura Ashley does a duck egg white, pale duck egg and duck egg paint colours. Maybe you could have the duck egg white as the predominant colour and use in both rooms but also use the pale duck egg or duck egg in the lounge, or add some wallpaper. Not sure grey walls would work with the kitchen units. Perhaps more of a taupe/warm grey would work in both spaces though.

Susiem14, I think this room looks lovely and cosy and like your fireplace. I would add a few bits in cream and fawn/grey. Please don't be offended by the comment above... Everybody is different and we all have different budgets! I have recently changed my lounge to be neutral tones - still working on the cushions but sending you a photo of my new rug - was from Dunelm Mill - not expensive at all but v pleased with it.

Thanks for the advice. I've just finished undercoating it white and it's very very bright (dazzling even). You would need to constantly wear sunglasses looking at it.

Would be a shame to paint over that….but if you must, I think a mat finish would be better than gloss.

I love it as it is too! If you do want to paint it black try Frenchic Blackjack it’s a lovely matt black. I upcycled some cheap metal filing cabinets for working from home. They’ve held up well.

I would agree that its beautiful as is, but if you want to paint it, a nice green similar to the lamp beside it would be lovely, or a neutral colour. I've painted a lot of old furniture and painting it black can loose a lot of the detail and character. Also, you could use a gilting wax to hi light the detail.

It looks beautiful and it would be criminal to paint it. Put your energy into removing damage instead of paintwork.

The wood grain and detail are beautiful but if you teally want to paint it i would go for a satin finish in a rich dark colour like navy blue/ dark purple or even a dark teal

I would leave it or only paint the flat panels leaving the raised pieces of wood in their natural state. I think a teal or blue would work well with the existing wood color. I agree black will lose all the detail.

I agree that it is best to would leave it as it is, especially because the wood grain shows so well - I think it is a big part of the style. You mention damage, is it major?
