open plan lounge colour scheme

We have open plan lounge kitchen diner. Kitchen and diner done and lounge is next. It’s quite a dark room. Colours used so far.. strong white and railings. Kitchen similar to purbeck stone. Thinking of a dark feature wallpaper on wall opposite fire. Any ideas welcome!

Yes it was! I bought it, then walked into home sense and saw another so I bought that one too!

Hi Andrea,

I love the colour scheme you have gone with! Are you considering changing the furniture in the lounge room? A dark wall paper would look great, and would look even better with a lighter coloured sofa.

Hi, thanks for your feedback. We are going to eventually change the brown sofas and bits of furniture. I’d like a light sofa but am hesitant having a black Labrador!👀🤭

Hi. I would try and go for a cohesive look throughout the house so it flows. Maybe choose a few colours for the walls that work together which could be different shades of grey for example (no pun intended!) or another neutral colour. Have a look at farrow and ball for inspiration as they make suggestions for colour matches. Paint all your ceilings and woodwork throughout in the same colour. Then pick accent colours for each room. Again these could be colours that work together. Have a look at a colour wheel to see what colours work together. As your living area is open plan you definitely need the colours to work together. If you chose a grey for example you could have an accent wall in a darker shade. I hope that helps. I didn't follow this for my old house but did for my new one and it does make a big difference.

A medium color floor is easier to keep looking clean than a dark or light floor. For an open floor plan, I would choose planks. One of the main features in the design of an open floor plan is to draw the eye through the space. A herringbone pattern would be confusing to the eye. Use herringbone in a small room.

Hi Andrea Broadbent, we like how you have the dark to light within the open plan space its really helped to zone the room. In terms of changing the furniture from the comments above, you can get sofa fabrics now which are aqua clean and can be simply cleaned with just water therefore a lighter fabric could be an option. You could opt for wallpapering more than one wall such as the one with the door and the fireplace wall.

Thankyou for your comments. After much deliberation I’ve decided to keep the walls in the living area “strong white” The same colour as in the kitchen then use wall art, cushions and throws to add colour. I just think it would be too dark with more “railings” added.

I think you’re right to keep it light. Accessories can add so much to a room. I like your rug. Was it from Dunelm?
