Bigger Island vs Kitchen Cabinet Space

This is the first iteration of plans from our architect.
1). See that wee lip of kitchen I've circled? Would you eliminate that integrating the fridge into a one-wall kitchen) and opt for a wider island (1800 mm) so all three of my kids can sit at the island, OR keep that corner for the fridge? Once you factor oven/hob/fridge there is a decent amount shelf space that is eliminated. Any kitchen inspo pics of one-walled kitchens that are roughly 4.1 m long are welcomed 🙈

I presume it’s integrated as opposed to Amercian style (some people have them built into a unit, hence me clarifying), so if you delete it from the original plan and have a larger island then you will have to put it in there?

You’re having the sink in the island? Is the hob over an undermounted oven?

Do you have a specific plan of the units in the kitchen area for better visualisation?

Daisy- thanks for answering! Yes- we have an American fridge at the moment and we would sell it for an integrated fridge freezer along the wall of cabinets (taking up more cabinet space!).
I haven’t planned the kitchen yet. Have an appointment Monday to see what I am working with. At the moment I would like a double oven NOT under the hob, but I may have to give in on that as well.
This is just a pic from Pinterest I pulled re roughly what I’m thinking. But not specific plan YET!

I am sorry to say you don't have room. You are only giving yourself 36" in front of the ovens and only 31" for passage on the opposite side and 42" is not enough between the island and the sink. You might find a smaller 30" wide x 48" moveable stainless steel prep table and placed in the opposite direction, it might work for additional counter surface but not give you the seating you would like.

A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

island pendant lighting

I would love some advice on finalizing a choice for island pendant lighting. My kitchen has 8 foot ceilings and the island will be 4'x6'. My husband is 6'1" so I want to make sure lighting isn't too low for his sight line but also to not have fixture too tall that it looks strange hugging the ceiling too closely. I like the seeded glass look and brushed nickel finish as it will coordinate with the glass front cabinet in wet bar area. I also prefer rod vs. chain or cord hanger. This light is 12.5" wide x 11.25" high. Would have a little longer drop from ceiling. I think I would do 2 instead of 3?? This light is 10.5" wide x 15.75" high. It would only have a 6" drop from ceiling so don't know if that is too big and too close to ceiling. Maybe do just 2 or possibly 3?? Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Kitchen cabinet layout - need help deciding!

We are building a new kitchen and need to decide on the order of cabinets. See the design attached. There is space on the wall behind the island for for: - Boiler (needs to stay in far left corner) - Fridge - Oven / Microwave - Pull-Out Larder The latest design has them in the order as above (left to right). Looking for other's opinions on how best to order the oven, fridge and larder. Any other thoughts welcome!

I would definitely get rid of the corner units to allow for bigger island. Corner units are a pain in the ass! Have you thought about making that WC smaller so that the kitchen can steal a bit more space from there - either to recess the big fridge back into the wall so it doesn't stick out so far (and keep your corner), or to make the long wall run longer?

Hi, do consider your options with the downstairs loo, I agree with CWD's comment that you could recess the fridge here, allowing the larger island perhaps? If you are used to a large American fridge will you be happy with a smaller one? I would look to increase the size of the island to accommodate seating the kids and remember you will probably gain a cupboard space under it by doing that. Good luck with your planning.

CWD- that’s a great idea about making the bathroom smaller. I’ll have a wee look. I wish I could just push it back further into the utility but there is a door in the way. 🙃

Ruth- the American fridge enables me to not clear out 4 month old half-used oyster sauce bottles and collect too many different types of barbecue sauces 😂 it WILL be an adjustment, but one I probably need to stop food waste. Totally forgot about the cupboard space underneath! That’s great.

Sarah you've made me laugh! I was just thinking about my own awful fridge situation and how much I look forward to our kitchen build so I can improve things.
