Temporary kitchen appliance options?

Hello, there's an unknown delay on our kitchen apiances due to the microchip shortage.
If we go ahead with all the building work and kitchen install as planned this September (to avoid rising prices), what can we use to cook with instead of an oven and hob please - potentially for months?
We have a microwave and slow cooker but that's it. Thanks

I’m glad you like it. It’s always trial and error when buying something new and cooking in a different way.

I have just purchased an air fryer but it’s not a Ninja so doesn’t have as many features. Was reluctant to spend £££s if I didn’t like it. Have become a member of several FB sites that offer information and recipes.

Tonight I will be trying it out for the first time in the hope of eating less fat especially as I’m now 4 weeks post op for having my gall bladder out which apparantly was full of stones and caused me horrendous pain and hospital admission.

I have bought some bread pans so am also going to have a go at breadmaking.

We’ve been living in temporary accommation for the past 8 months, which was without a hob or oven. I purchased a two burner tabletop hob and we already had a microwave convection oven - which I’d only ever used as a microwave. After a few incidents due to ignorance, I now love and appreciate our combi oven. You can’t really bake in it or cook a big roast, but these two appliances and a multi cooker (purchased to cook rice, but now use for baking small cakes, perfect for the two of us!). If you enjoy cooking, you can make it work. Good luck!

My 2¢ worth: first of all replace the dark blinds with translucent cordless single cell blinds in ivory or off-white--they let light through and provide privacy + some insulation from cold or heat. Clean, crisp look.That alone will brighten up this space. #2: clear the counterspace!--so much clutter! Where to put all these appliances that get little daily use? Get yourself a ss 24x20 or larger cart on wheels (see Amazon.com--Seville classic ss cart) and store little used, bulky appliances on its shelves--and roll the cart into a nearby coat closet--out of sight and way-- to be wheeled back when needed or individually carried back as needed. 3#gorgeous blue tiled walls.Don't touch them. #4:Walls: keep as is if off-white--not same as trim white white.Just a fresh coat needed.To make it "disappear," paint the radiator the same color as the wall behind it. #5Keep the white trim white--looks bright and clean.Keep kitchen door white. You might want to stop here and make no further changes #6Cabinets: I like Gast pic above on right, but too much blue for your blue-tiled kitchen...IMO. I'd go cooler and lighter...consider the light gray of the beadboard in the Gast pic above right. Beautiful hue. Don't go for the white white everyone clamors for these days.Too stark for your kitchen and too contrasty with the blue tile, too country kitchenish. #7. cabinet hardware: Look like glass knobs in pics. Go for knobs/pulls like in the Gast pic above--or similar in pewter or ss, my preference. Those "modern" ss bar handles don't work with your cabinets. #8 the round table is not a good fit against the wall. Get a small sq or rectangular ss or butcherblock-top table for that spot. Chop off the top tier of your chairs to shorten....and match their tops as they are now so's won't appear to take up so much visual space and still remain comfy--don't replace w/ uncomfortable stools.Keep white. #9. Do away with wood valance over sink window.Too country. #10 Countertops--solid color Corian type or laminate--depends on budget--don't want busy stone textures of quartz, etc. Consider a medium value cool gray. (Or maple butcherblock?). Can't see color/texture of floor.... hope some of this helps. Good luck! lisianthus' pic tho nice is too busy-cutesy for your minimalist aims IMO

When you are punished, you are sent to the corner..... don't punish your sink/cooktop etc. Seriously now, as a last resort only. It's not fun to stand at the corner with two walls closing on you while you cook, wash etc.

Hi PCmom, sstarr and lefty47. Thanks a million for the comments and views. I'm taking it all on board. PCmom I like the frosted glass idea but I think it will block too much light. We are actually thinking of doing this though in our front sitting room as the window is floor to ceiling. Love the recycled lumber idea and it looks great in the photo - think my husband is hell bent on steel shelving though. sstarr - I'm gonna have a look at your profile pics now but I don't think we will have enough wall space for floor to ceiling pantry. lefty47 we are keeping the appliances for now. It is only the oven - its not the prettiest but its functional and we will most definitely get a new fitted one in the future. There are a few other pictures there of the room around and the left wall - can you not see them? If not I can try and add them again. I'm glad you liked the toilet paper. It took me ages to decide where to place that! What does everyone think about colours of the cabinets? I think we might go for a neutral tone on the wall (unless anyone can visualise anything better?) and either with the steel shelving or possibly the recycles ,lumber idea from PCmom? Hello trifides, What about chrome? Good at reflecting light.. A dual fuel Smeg range for example... A Dualit chrome toaster.. Architect kettle also Dualit.. Shiny elements will really pick up the light.. With the cabinets and the flooring, consider textures and warm elements to boost the look.. I think chrome is a good addition.. as both red and orange might clash with the flooring and cabinets in the colour and finish you have.. Think of other textures and materials you can introduce ...Chopping boards are lovely stacked and marble is another lovely material to use.. Pestle and mortar and a cheese board (I use mine for toast etc.... (Anthropologie and Habitat.. Maybe you want a cream Smeg retro style fridge.... You could then have some cream tiles or a creamy coloured granite for a splash back.. Then maybe a cream Aga... If you were replacing the worktop.. I'd suggest having an upstand as I love this sleek finish.. You can add the same material behind the oven to compliment.. Keep the worktop as clear as possible and a potted rosemary or two could be lovely... Of course the other thing I could suggest is painting the cabinets should you want to consider that as an option for you.. : ))

Many years ago when we undertook knocking 2 rooms into one big kitchen I managed on a camping cooker but it was only for a couple of weeks.

There is indeed a problem with appliance supplies. I have heard of customers shopping around and were lucky in their search and managed to allocate certain items.

Have you looked at a Ninja? I subscribe to several caravan forums and heaps of people on there recommend them. You might even find you like to use it and it could become a permanent fixture.

I think it will be the hob part that might create the most problems as it’s that what most people use. Perhaps look for a second hand one?

We’re almost 3 months without a cooker due to renovation… using a table top dual hob, a combo microwave oven, (all borrowed) and a instant pot. All fine, oven is the thing I miss as the combi leaves chips soggy… it will do a garlic bread or bit or crisping, but I’d love a lasagne. Our new oven hasn’t turned up yet more than 6 months after ordering, so I’m hoping the small single oven will be ok. Otherwise I’d look for temporary second hand appliances on eBay or Facebook to tide you over

Oh my I've just googled Ninja cookers, wow! Also good to know from people's experience that it can be done on a longer term basis with pretty basic equipment. Thanks

People seem to lover the Ninja. There are several different ones so I gather. Some of the caravan sites only offer a small wattage for ovens and caravan owners struggle to use their ovens when something else is also switched on, plus the standard ones that come with the caravan are rather naff. We put our own in which is the same as you would have in your home so I always use the standard oven.

There is also a FB Ninja page with recipes on.

I’ve attached a couple of photos off the caravan site page of what people have recently purchased. They’re very popular. Hope this helps.

@Daisy England, I wasn't intending on getting one yet, but a friend was selling her (nearly new) Ninja as it was too big for her and her husband so figured why not go for it now. Very excited to try it!

Update on using Ninja Foodie (I got the 14 in 1 second hand from Facebook)... as a sceptic of things that claim they can perform multiple tasks well, I am very pleasantly surprised by this bit of kit. I haven't used the oven or hob since I started playing with this bit of kit since Sunday. I've roasted chicken, baked baguettes, pressure cooked porridge, some all-in-one meals, it's more energy efficient than the oven, takes less time to cook and easier to clean. In short, I love it so much that I'm thinking of downgrading my kitchen appliance order!.
