Kitchen dilemma

last year

We have an oak kitchen and want to paint the walls. At the moment they are duck egg blue and have been for around 10 years although they have been repainted many time. We definitely want a change but really need some advice and inspiration. TIA

Hi Paula, what colours are you drawn to and also what colours are in the adjoining rooms? It's always good to consider those for a cohesive look? As this leads outside it might be nice to think about greens as an option. And they would really lift the wood of the cabinets too. Let me know!

Thank you for your reply. I must admit I have been drawn to greens. We are currently having lots of work done in the lounge/dining room but our colours are grey/brown with a feature media wall with Venetian plaster.

I agree, I think the kitchen units are quite charming. The tiles date it, the top of the dresser and the piece over the window. Agree, would paint the ceiling a soft chalky white. I know they're becoming a little overdone but metro tiles would suit but handmade ones in a soft white unless you just remove the tiles altogether and have a splashback by the oven. Can you afford to update the floor? The dresser offers good storage space, have you considered either just removing the top half or updating the top so changing the architrave and glass panes? The fire itself looks lovely, do you need the heater in front? I also like the brick but the recesses are dating it. I definitely wouldn't paint the brick, if you were to do anything I think it would need plastering over to cover the niches unless you are able to match the brick. Do you have a better pic of the firep? If you are set on painting the kitchen units, I would look at the really dark greys and inky Blues for the base units, as I think they'd suit the style well, with brass cup handles with a very pale grey for ŵall units. Or if you want the same colour units, look at a mid tone grey.

Hi Louise, Lovely new kitchen, such a lovely bright space too. I would suggest going a couple of shades darker than the kitchen furniture colour so you get a contrast to the furniture and flooring. This will help keep it on a neutral palette so your other furniture and accessories are not competing with too many colours. Also as your room as so much natural light you can go for a slightly stronger wall colour and it will look superb. the photo below shows a very cool grey wall you could go for a warmer grey but it give you an idea of what you could do. Painting the walls can always be changed relatively easily, so if you want a change after a few years you can and it's a lot less costly than a new kitchen! Hi What do you guys think of having a range in the kitchen island? The thing is I want an integrated griddle too and its only available (or I can only afford) on a range. Theres no hob that Im aware of that has an integrated griddle other than the wolf and miele which are very expensive but there are a few affordable range with griddle. Is it bad or unsafe to have a range on a kitchen island? I love green too. My sitting room is painted in Farrow & Ball Cromarty and its a soft grey green. My tv unit is oak.

Greens and oak go well together so do look at a green. Like Sonia I also have Cromarty in my office and Tranquil Dawn in my lounge.

Green it is then! There are some gorgeous soft greens out there. To flow through from a grey/brown tone in the living room then go for a green with a similar undertone. So if your grey/brown has a yellow undertone than aim for that or if it is more of a cool blue undertone then match to that. Do get a couple of tester pots and try them out as they will look very different on the walls by the windows in comparison to the wall by the units due to the light in the room.
