Staircase to loft dilemma

Hello fellow Houzzers,

I’m attaching a picture of my staircase leading to the loft conversion. It doesn’t look right to me so I’d really appreciate your thoughts/ideas on how I can rectify it/make it look prettier. Thank you 😊

I don’t understand why there is a bannister in front of the bannister going upstairs? Looks odd to me.

I personally like the kitchen, kind of a Scandinavian modern look. leave the skirts, doors and trims as is. Paint wise, I am going to invite you to a kitchen gallery that I think works well with the existing aesthetic you have now. I like the "Melrose Kitchen" in this instance, as an example of wall color. The trim is painted here, but leaving yours as is, I believe, would be fine! Happy Houzzing.

Yes. But that said it depends on the flooring in the rest of the house the style of staircase and also the style of runner . I don’t like runners on stairs but that is me.

A few things I would change from experience...instead of a single and double door I would spend the extra money and put in a bifold corner section...would open up the space so much more. as for the kitchen...completely flip your design...put your breakfast bar closer to the window...make it large and multipurpose with the hob in it and then put your main band of cabinets either left, right or behind? We have recently restructured our existing cabinets to this layout and put in new countertops and it works far better than before!

There is a small triangular gap that needs to be blocked off but I’m not sure the bannister is the way to go about it. Also I feel that the loft staircase starts too high.

I suspect if you had taken the picture from another angle there wouldn’t be resistance to it.

The banister is necessary for safety and it is an appropriate choice as there are lots of other spindles elsewhere.

I agree the newel post to the attic looks tall but I suspect there is an extra step not shown on the picture.

So I’m my opinion it just needs painting and a carpet- and I might add a turned knob to the top of the newel post so it matches the original one shown to the right of the picture.

I was going to say the same thing about the newel post! When I had my loft done they matched the old newel posts exactly. Yours are more elaborate, but you should be able to get something made to match. Ideally the new staircase would look like it’s always been there (after painting, etc).

I agree it looks odd. Shouldn’t the banister end butting up to a newel post not be attached to the side of it ? The overlapping banisters look busy - and good luck painting them! If the triangle is small couldn’t it be filled in with wood painted to match the banister ? I think that would look neater.

I agree. I plan to remove the bannister and fill the gap with matching wood or I might take the newel post out so the bannister curves up continuing up to the loft..any thoughts much appreciated!

We did the same as 123 - used the old hand rail and bannisters to make this - left a little space between the new staircase and the little sloping piece The new loft bannisters are chunkier 'cos of building regs. - sorry think I've uploaded one twice -!
