Flooring dilemma

Hi there, we have bought a new build house with a big open plan kitchen living area, with south facing bifolds. I am a natural, earthy, organic person who is already struggling with a shiny new build. I absolutely love wood/engineered wood but am scared to put it in the open plan area in case the wood gets ruined by water spills, dishwasher leakage etc. My husband says we should go for lvt but I’m not convinced. I do like lvt herringbone but think it’s too busy a pattern for our wide open plan area. Should we go for the engineered wood or is this a terrible idea? It might be worth mentioning that we have a 3 year old black Labrador and I’m pregnant. Thanks for any advice

In a kitchen LVT is definitely the way to go. Easy to clean too. I use a steam mop on mine. You can’t use one with engineered flooring.

I agree with you about new builds feeling a bit 'shiny'. I would go for huge format tiles such as Mandarin Stone concrete look ones (Kast sand) in a warm colour. You can't scuff them, they are very practical and look good in a contemporary setting. I've got engineered wood but I wouldn't have it in a kitchen and I have LVT in my studio which is super practical but doesn't 'feel' like wood it that's imporatant to you.

I would re post the dilemma calling them units as I think you will get more responses then! In terms of colour you have fairly free rein. There's a very useful facility on Sherwin Williams website where you can paint colours on to photos. I think you have to be on a computer though. Look at the colours in lots of different lights and live with large areas painted as samples to help you get a feeling for them.

Go for a beige upholstered headboard, white bedding, beige throw & some feature cushions that have the beige & grey in them. Another option is to paint the walls to a similar shade as the wardrobe so it blends in. I would be careful what you do for furniture, possibly steer clear of too much more timber

You could do a black paint trim over the wooden bits. It would go with the work tops. But not so much with the creamy doors; Or get all of the kitchen units spray painted white? I think if you try to match the floor with the wood of the units in the kitchen you may leave yourself open to a mismatch or even just an overload of wood. I didn't feel there was enough black there as the island top kind of took me by surprise on first seeing it. But could you remove that granite altogether and see how it looks then? Maybe it's the black that's the problem not the wood at all
