Please could I ask for advice on installing an eclectic kitchen?

I am buying a cottage which has an aga in a very small kitchen. I would love to use a mixture of cupboards, shelves, rather than actual fitted units. There is also a Belfast sink, which needs replacing. I would love to place it within a piece of furniture. The heights of individual pieces will all vary, and I am unsure how to tackle worktops. I'm hoping to end up with an individual, one off, using recycled items of furniture. Any advice would be really appreciated.

Ideally you will need to make all the different components the same height for the worktop. I would not be chopping the worktops into different lengths to cater for the different heights because each end will need edging glued to it to protect it from moisture to make the guarantee valid.

If each component is a different height would you be able to make the legs vary thereby making the total height all round the same for the worktop?

If you have a Belfast sink you will need a solid top (either quartz or solid timber) not laminate to fit it in.

I think you should buy a selection of cabinets, dressers, glass painted cupboards and painted wood items. Then find a quality joiner to help you transform them into a fitted kitchen. Where this guy are mismatched use a matching colour to pull them together.

And Daisys point is spot on- especially in a small kitchen you need worktop to be well fitted and seamless to ensure the kitchen is hygienic and functional.

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

No, ask away :-) I'm not a pro though, just kind of passionate about design and interiors and all that :-) Great cabinet. I'm really not opposed to mixing metals. You'll get a more eclectic mix. It is the result of going with what you love and not with what you think goes with something else. And that will give your interior your own personal style. Matter of taste. Some people really don't like it. Others do :-) Go for a fairly large coffee table. I would think at least 100 cm wide. Tape (news) paper together to the size of the coffee table you like and lay that on the floor. It will give you an idea about the scale in your room. You need it to be easily reachable from the sofas, since you have these high armrests. And your room can take a large table. If you can't find a large one you like, you can also think about putting together 4 smaller square ones for example. The one with the metal base (I took two from the Soul Lifestyle site) is on the smallish side. The black one is larger. Round fits nicely with the shape of your sofas. Not sure if I mocked up the sizes correctly, but I think the lovely side table is too small. The lamp is about 70 cm tall (again, I guestimated the size), but it does look small on that low table. You mentioned 12mm laminated floor yet you are asking about 'wood'. These are often two different floors. Are you asking about an engineered HARDWOOD that is 12mm thick or are you talking about a 12mm LAMINATED floor (fibre board with a pretty picture of wood on the top)? Engineered hardwood works well in a kitchen (just like Oak & Broad points out). Laminated flooring normally DOES NOT do well in a kitchen. That means the answer to your question could be "yes" or "no"....depending on which floor you are talking about. Please clarify.

Hi amfork, I went ahead & put the hob on my island & am delighted I did. I find it really is so much nicer looking out at the kids/my husband & being able to chat to them while I prepare meals as opposed to facing the wall with my back turned on everyone. I put a 4 ring induction hob on the island & put a 5 ring gas hob on counter facing wall. I did this as I have a large extended family & we frequently have get togethers. It’s great for catering for big events. However, I use the 4 ring induction hob on a daily basis. Hope this helps! Best of luck with your project, Claire
