Design of open plan kitchen

Hi guys,

I'm unsure how to layout this open plan kitchen to include a kitchen, dining table and a play area/tv area for kids.

I've played around for the idea of stud walls to create separation in the areas however i'm unsure if this would ruin the open plan feel of the room and make it cramped

This is a full refurb so feel free to play around with the design however the kitchen must be placed on the right wall as that is where the pipes are

Hi, it looks good - others will come along with much better ideas than me but the only thing i would do is have the tv on the wall which says 2.7 and then a corner sofa (so one side of the sofa is where your tv is now, and the other side has it's back to your dining table. I can't see if you have a window on that wall though, where i am suggesting the tv goes, but just my thoughts. Also i wouldn't worry about zoning the areas...i have a similar layout and i works well, it could look too cramped with partitions in.

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

Thanks for your comments. I think we've decided on wooden flooring throughout the open plan space but it's just what we do in living area. We had wanted carpet to get that warm cosy affect. We are considering under floor heating but I understand that can be expensive. I know we can put a rug down although I'm not sure whether that will have the desired warm and cosy feel. The other option is to fit carpet in a rectangle or circle shape in the living area. Just not sure how that's going to look and how best to join it to the wood so that it looks good. I've not seen open areas with carpet and tiles/wooden flooring...it seems that usually flooring is the same throughout with a rug in the living area. Any suggestions? I attach a plan which shows what it will hopefully look like. The dining table will go near to the patio doors. The sofa will be in an L shape with the back to the kitchen on one side and the other back to the dining area on the other side. Any flooring ideas would be appreciated!

Hi, One of the possible plans is to block off the window and put tall units with eye level ovens, larder, fridge freezer etc. keep the sink run in a straight line with sink, dishwasher, pull out bin and in the island put in the hob with drawers underneath. Either put in ceiling mounted extractor or a downdraft depending on what stage of build you are at. Hope this helps, we are in Northern Ireland if you but do work throughout the uk. If you are worried about the hallway being dark why not have a fully glazed door into the open plan area at this bottom of the stairs. This would allow you to see straight through the house when you walk in the front door and make the hallway feel much brighter and less closed in?
