Not sure how to decorate living room?
I usually make all curtains and blinds, but got fed up with it, so needing to re-decorate I bought these fantiastic quality curtains, a cancelled order from John Lewis, at a fraction of the price- two hugh full length pairs, one to go right across front window and one to cover the double doors on opposite wall, which lead into garden room. They are dark indigo navy with an neutral art deco type pattern. All our wood on windows and doors, skirtings ect are oak tone wood, as is floor and furniture. The room faces East and is not too light in the evening, it is quite compact and cosy with a wood burning stove. I am not sure what colour to put on the walls, we only use it for the evenings. I would like something warmer and more luxe in feeling than the taupish/grey, slightly Scandi scheme we have at present, which, lacks atmosphere in the evening light. Have I made a terrible mistake with these new curtains?! The two sofas are taupe/neutral, close to the colour in new curtains and we have to keep those.

3 months agoThose curtains are lovely. How about just painting the fireplace wall right across in a navy? It will create cosiness but not drown the room in darkness.

Comments (37)Hello CG, you can buy some of these and try them on site. From the pictures you posted I get the feeling you have 2 colors with similar saturation both fighting for attention. It's a little too much. I would keep the green but go softer on the red (i.e rust). You can also let yourself be inspired by the grey/silver/bordeaux floral and stripe pillows to create a brand new color scheme using these colors instead. For example, a very soft gray on the walls, gray carpet, grey/bordeaux combo in the curtains and for the sofa accents, pillows similar to these 2. It's decision time. Comments (9)Thanks, I wasn't sure where the 9'4 measurement came in. If you're buying all new furniture then look for items on legs, as you can see the floor beneath it will make the space feel bigger. You can also use glass ie a glass coffee table or Louis ghost chairs for example. I'd also go for a large mirror over the hearth or not knowing your style could also have a ŵall of glass tiles for the same effect which will also bounce light. I'd go for a pale tone sofa and use warmer/darker colours for cushions if wanted. If you want a rug then I'd keep it in the same tone as the floor else to visually maximise floor space. I've drawn a very rough plan (not entirely to scale and obviously not knowing where doors etc are!). I assume you're wanting to buy furniture before you move in? If so do you have a similar size room where you could cut out paper templates of all furniture to see if the space works? I would mount the tv on the ŵall if you have one. Hanging it over a slim console (or slim cabinet for storage) means you can add art on the ŵall and accessorise the console so the tv doesn't become the feature of the ŵall. You could go for a coffee table or a small footstool which can double up as extra seating and table. I'd go for a round dining table, 3ft will seat 4 and you can pull it away from the corner when entertaining. i'd go for a 2 seater sofa (c5f?) but try and get a slim one. I don't know the size of the windows but blinds, shutters may also be an idea so curtains don't encroach on the floor space? Comments (0)Hi there, I recently moved into a new house and am searching for inspiration for how to decorate my new living room. It has a cast iron tiled fire place from 1880 which will stay. It has high ceilings with picture rail detail. It is south facing and sunny but we plan to mainly use the room in the evenings as a grown up retreat from the chaos of family life. It also needs to accommodate the tv and storage for lots of books! We will probably keep the carpet which is light colored and neutral but everything else can be new, paint curtains, sofa, furniture. It’s a blank canvas apart from the fireplace. I would like a fairly contemporary style rather than traditional but I am not sure how that will work with the old fireplace.
