Door hinges moulded in frame

I live in a 60s ex council house. Our door frames are metal with the hinges moulded to them. We’re replacing the doors but cannot change the hinges due to this. The frames are anchored into the wall, to remove them you basically take the wall with it (we made this mistake on a door downstairs). How can I remove 60 years of paint from the hinges to improve the look without damaging the frame or new door? Photo incase I’ve not explained it well!

You could remove the door, try and remove the pin, soak one half of the hinge in paint stripper and apply some to the other half still attached to the wall and wrap in cling film.

Personally, I would chisel into the door frame and remove whatever material is covering up the other half of the hinge in order to remove the while thing. You can easily patch in some strip wood to tidy up any mess you made.

My 2¢ worth: first of all replace the dark blinds with translucent cordless single cell blinds in ivory or off-white--they let light through and provide privacy + some insulation from cold or heat. Clean, crisp look.That alone will brighten up this space. #2: clear the counterspace!--so much clutter! Where to put all these appliances that get little daily use? Get yourself a ss 24x20 or larger cart on wheels (see Amazon.com--Seville classic ss cart) and store little used, bulky appliances on its shelves--and roll the cart into a nearby coat closet--out of sight and way-- to be wheeled back when needed or individually carried back as needed. 3#gorgeous blue tiled walls.Don't touch them. #4:Walls: keep as is if off-white--not same as trim white white.Just a fresh coat needed.To make it "disappear," paint the radiator the same color as the wall behind it. #5Keep the white trim white--looks bright and clean.Keep kitchen door white. You might want to stop here and make no further changes #6Cabinets: I like Gast pic above on right, but too much blue for your blue-tiled kitchen...IMO. I'd go cooler and lighter...consider the light gray of the beadboard in the Gast pic above right. Beautiful hue. Don't go for the white white everyone clamors for these days.Too stark for your kitchen and too contrasty with the blue tile, too country kitchenish. #7. cabinet hardware: Look like glass knobs in pics. Go for knobs/pulls like in the Gast pic above--or similar in pewter or ss, my preference. Those "modern" ss bar handles don't work with your cabinets. #8 the round table is not a good fit against the wall. Get a small sq or rectangular ss or butcherblock-top table for that spot. Chop off the top tier of your chairs to shorten....and match their tops as they are now so's won't appear to take up so much visual space and still remain comfy--don't replace w/ uncomfortable stools.Keep white. #9. Do away with wood valance over sink window.Too country. #10 Countertops--solid color Corian type or laminate--depends on budget--don't want busy stone textures of quartz, etc. Consider a medium value cool gray. Prior to adding any trims to the door, use a small piece of trim, attach it to the door with double stick tape on the hinge side and check to see that the door opens. It might not! Attaching trim to the door is more than just cutting the trim, no? I can give you a more detailed set of instructions if you decide to go that route...but I'm for painting the wardrobe (and all the woodwork in the room) white.

If you want custom cream panelling built from scratch, it is likely to take you more than three weeks to line up a contractor, get it built and then painted. If you want to use beadboard (thin, lightweight, cheap) you can do it yourself if you are good at the small precision cuts around the wood window trim and behind the radiators. You can get a custom built wood cover with doors for your tv or use the painting over tv disguise made with hinges. I think the room is beautiful as it is. Spend some money on a truly beautiful, impressive chandelier, have it centered over the table. If you want to impress relatives at an event, the chandelier is the way to go. Clean the windows for extra sparkle. If you are in the US, try Home Decorators http://www.homedecorators.com for DVD storage cabinets that are closed. I would not get a rug for this room unless I was ready to get it cleaned frequently and I could find one that looked good with dog hair on it and did not show stains. A good quality, highly patterned wool Oriental rug will do that job nicely. Such a rug is an investment and may take longer than three weeks to find.

Personally, I would rather not have the space between ceiling and tall units - would take units right up to ceiling. Something just doesn't sit right with me with regard to spacing- in particular the very small space to the left of the hob. Like others I feel there are too many colours and would have had the island in a grey - but I love the colours of the walls. I like the shelf - but not pushed in the corner like that!! One of the first things that caught my eye was the different colours of door and window frames in the house- I would have kept them all the same.... Not going to mention the stools!!!! I love the rounded units and would have opted to have rounded edges on the island to be in keeping, personally. Finally, this all sounds rather picky but we all know it is down to personal taste and overall it looks very nice. THANK YOU for allowing us all to put our two pennith in and our would be designer hats on..... I love these articles and it does give us food for thought!

We can’t remove the hinge entirely unfortunately. This is a frame we removed as part of our house renovations. The pin comes out so half the hinge can be removed but the rest is all part of the frame. I think we’ll need to strip it and repaint. Knowing it will crack again!

A lot of paint stripper? You can get some that are a paste and that you can leave for a long time. You probably will have to do it multiple times to get the full pain off… and use a wired steel pad in between. good luck, it going to be long and messy.

I have never heard of a hinge fixed to a door frame. Unless the frame is metal and the hinges are welded in place, somewhere under layers of paint and filler in the other half of the hinge. A good chisel should let you get to the screws holding it in place.

Since you have the old door frame you can try it out on that first.
