With an open plan space is it important to zone the areas of the room with things such as rugs, paint, wallpaper and furniture etc whilst still keeping a cohesive look and flow throughout the room.

It might help if there was an idea of what you are looking to place in the area illustrated. 2 2 seat sofas, or sofa arm chair combination, low line tv unit, bookcases? Is this area also encompassing a dining or study area? Where is the kitchen in relation to this area, if it is to include dining? This sort of info would elicit more detailed replies.
