Water softener vs Water conditioner? Any thoughts?

Love any input on Water Softener vs Water Conditioner question that we're currently facing.

I've mixed reviews of each from plumbers on each and online reviews for conditioners such as Aquabion, which given where we are with plumbing (see later), would be easier to install, also seem to be completely mixed. Even the trusty Which Guide hasn't covered this topic yet. So I'd love to hear anyone with knowledge of experience on this?

We are in a very hard water area. We have installed brand new underfloor heating, white appliances and lovely brassware in bathrooms into a big refurb. Because we were doing this in hard water area, it was agreed very early on with the firm looking after design and project management of the build that it would be sensible to include a water softener in the works. Sadly the same company now deny being instructed to do this, as does the builder they recommended, despite a clear email trail which shows otherwise. Ugh! But no more on that - that's just another nauseating story about a deeply dodgy company for another day. `:-( :-(

We've also been left with no plans to show how the building is plumbed (the plumber engaged byt the building company, said he needed to retrieve from these from his hard drive but that was last August! This has meant rectifying the various plumbing issues we were left to sort out, all noted by surveyor I might add and some extremely unsafe has taken longer than it should do, as contractors first have to work out how the plumbing has been laid out. We've deduced from the little information we have manged to extract from both the design and project managing company, th building company and the plumber they engaged, that this instruction was overlooked and the house wasn't plumbed to accommodate a water conditioner. Water from mains to kitchen etc etc. Hence the conditioner option has been suggested as it would remove the need to change the plumbing. I thought we'd cracked it until I began researching them and got such mixed feed back.

Sadly this issue at the end of long line of nasties both companies left us with so I would so appreciate hearing from anyone with knowledge or experience of either the softener or the conditioner, particularly if its someone who actually has had either for over a year.

Thanks so much in anticipation.
