what to do with this unused space?

When doing up our farmhouse we discovered a hole. We decided to make bigger and planned to take it right to floor. However old stone was more difficult to remove and there was concern we could end up dislodging other stone that were needed for support. So as you will see from pics it is quite a bit off the floor. The idea was to make into a den or utilize it for part of my sons bed- we put a spot light in and electric point. Problem was old house- water came in (fixed temporarily.) + damp. My son is now several yrs older, not keen on den or bed there. The space gets used as a dumping ground.
I am now keen to do something with it. As it is an opening we can’t put furniture in front (toy cupboard at low level used to step in) I don’t want to board up as it was a lot of effort making it to what it is. Husband suggests wardrobe/hanging space and storage. This could work but it is so high and deep. I am 5’5 and can stand up in the highest part with a little room spare. My son at present is smaller than me. However we still need to comfortable step in which we can’t at present. If we had hanging across it would need to be nearer the opening- thus a lot of wasted space behind.
Anyone got some good ideas that will look good. Doesn’t have to be wardrobe space but would mean we could get rid of one he has now and free up some floor space. We have no attic either so storage in our home is a blessing.

Get a carpenter in to make a set of vertical pull out cupboards like you see being built under stairs nowadays. It is about the same shape and access would be easier.

Wow, I really like this design and the rest of the house....really has a lovely flow to it and is very bright. My only concern with opening up the original living room to the hallway would be that the existing house is poorly insulated and would leave the front room cold during the winter. I imagine the existing front room as a dynamic room in that the doors to the dining room can be closed, a stove fire turned on and it would be a quiet reading/relaxing zone in the house. Though I must admit...the above example provided is really tempting. thanks Dytecture!

Hi Antoinette I too live in Ireland in a Semi Detached. My husband who's the one with green fingers has transformed our garden into an oasis you wouldn't think we lived in a housing estate. You might start with cleaning the slabs. You could change the edging tile with a contrasting one to set it off. Use different sizes and colours of pots. A seating area in one section. Use lots of different colours and plants which are ok to grow in pots. Just seeing all the colours come to life in Spring and Summer will cheer you up. Here are some photos that were taken at the end of summer last year the leaves have started falling from the trees. Oh yeah still have the clothes line up too.

I understand what you want to do, so here's my suggestion, if it fits.....I'd move the couch under the mirror. Move table to the center of the kitchen, like an island. Sounds like it's two adults and two toddlers, so I'd definitely remove two of those chairs. Are your kids in high-chairs, if so move the other two chairs out too. Basically you want four chairs not six. Move them to a garage, basement or another room. Put the chairs around two or three sides of the table. I'd leave the side near the stove and washing machine(?) open. TV would mount to the right of the back door. See if that would work. Either way, it's going to be a tight space. Post pics please.

Hi ! I am looking for some ideas for the end wall in an open plan kitchen/dining drop down sitting room area. The fireplace space can be brought down in height if necessary . I'm thinking some paneling with a built in fire place ...but I am open to any suggestions. Just put into perspective the width from window on left to wall on other side is 6.1 m. Thanks !

My kids had/have about a skip full of lego, all in different boxes (the long ones you get with lids). Deep shelves could be really useful for storing lego etc and they could be removed at a later date for hanging clothes.

The depth is just over 5’ . Shelving fine but would need to pull out and down (for high ones)!
I do like idea of pull out cupboards but that would mean getting rid of light. Also they would pull out quite far and with no support as literally in the air with top of cupboard inaccessible? Any ideas on how to make work???

I had a very deep space wand put 2 rails at rear and then 2 rails at front to create wardrobe. I struggled to access back day to day so clothes at back never got worn (i had way too many clothes!)
Could you have something
simple like keeping rear for storing things that may usually be kept in loft (eg suitcases, Xmas stuff) but then put a rail in front for hanging clothes which would then hide this.
Not exciting but may be practical? And easy to change if another option is found.

Maybe some shelving for books, puzzles, lego... bibs and bobs, then place cushions or a bench cushion at the front so it becomes a seating area for those quiet activities.
