Cupboard understairs ideas

Evening folks
I have a cupboard under our stairs 4.5 feet deep 2.5 feet wide. Now I'm wondering what can I use this for? We have a boot room so coats & shoes are taken care of any thoughts on something imaginative please.

Hello Ricky,

My first choice, if you're looking for something imaginative, would be a wine storage section. Obviously, they have to like wine and it would need to be built!

Alternatively, there's an article here on Houzz which has some great ideas which may also give you some inspiration.

Hi Ricky,

I love Ginas idea of a wine rack!

Other options (depending on what you hobbies needs/ are) could be a library wall, great if you have a house full of books like me

Or could be a used as a mini office space or study area for the kids with a pull out desk? If you could move the seat into the room at the end of the day you could keep the doors and close it off in the evening.

Or maybe a pantry - can be a great way to utilise space and the more room in the kitchen

i agree! yes those are doors to hotpress on the left so there will be dead space. Will attach those floor plans now shortly. Its definitely odd and its not sitting right with me. We are confined to a tiny space for laundry and that laundry chute on the right top corner (not pictured) is not movable to any other point. Its also supposed to be pictured as being atttatched to the ceiling above so the clothes are concealed. Its an old protected house so the window had to stay making it look very asymmetrical. Thanks for any further input! The problem is that we've already ordered the doors etc so theres no going back. Any ideas on what someone would have done had they the opportunity from scratch would be also well received! (we have loads of storage in a separate utility so this laundry is purely for clothes) Thanks in advance folks!

East Kent Eco - again thank you for your input. As a pro I wonder if you could offer your thoughts on a couple of scenarios 1 - Leave bath where it is - what would be involved in moving the shower 4-6 inches to the centre of the bath? I did consider the P shaped bath and will consider your suggestion for a shorter bath to allow room for the toilet, but I currently had to put in a door stop to protect the shower door from the entrance door handle and I would be concerned about a rounded door being even closer. If I left the bath where it is I have a couple of options, turning the toilet and cistern 90 degrees to the adjoining wall - see above for the considerations there, or I have also considered switching the toilet and sink. I would put the sink facing the wall where the cistern currently is have a large-ish vanity from the base of the bath to the wall, and the if the toilet was where the sink is it would not interfere with the doors for the hot press as the seat would be considerably lower than the sink is currently thus giving me the better access I want. In this scenario the main issue for me would be the toilet would be facing the entrance door, a bit unsightly but if it gave me the space I want I think I could live with the compromise. 2 - A bit more involved, but I have also considered moving the bath sideways along the short length of the room, shower end over the space where the cistern is currently and moving the sink and toilet to the space where the bath is currently. I think this would allow me room for a vanity and maybe also a tall storage cupboard for the towels and linens currently in the hot press. The obvious concern with this is the shower spray in the direction of the hot press, if I got the storage I needed elsewhere in the bathroom I wouldn't be concerned about those getting wet, but would want to ensure I don't end up with a leak over the stairs. Access would also be an issue if repairs were required for the shower pump or the hot water system. You would have to step into the bath to gain access. Is there a solution to waterproof the cupboard?

thanks both & sorry for not getting back sooner. Appreciate it! unfortunately, while lovely, glass panels are going to be too expensive as is upgrading the doors/walls upstairs (realistically we would have to take down all the upstairs walls and start again to make any difference). But thanks. Obviously if we do enclose it will use a glazed door at the base (the rules about the size of landing you need don't seem to be too strict here in Ireland - must have 40 cm from the base step completely free) so we are thinking door at the base of the stairs opening towards the front door. My sister in law however suggests using the entire width between the front door and the stairs as storage, fairly similar to now, but with a door opening out into the kitchen. still thinking. thanks again for your input anyway.

Hi Odette! Have you had any progress with decorating? Hanging a mirror could be good in terms of light reflection and making a space seem bigger than it is. I like your idea with the photographs and horizontal lines - I might add some adjustable spotlights to make a feature out of the photographs! For e.g.

If you have young children how about a little playhouse den or a even a santa's grotto :D A gnome has got to have a home ^^ Or a den for pets. There are a few pictures on pinterest for ideas and inspiration , good luck and let your imaginations run wild!!!!! :) Would love to see what you do and upload pictures , T
