Dead Space above stairs - New build

last year

behind the wall is nothing - end of the house

my house is poor with storage and tiny - i need more space for items

ideally i want to keep out of season clothes or suitcases

pls no suggestions of artwork

i was thinking maybe a cupboard with poles to hand coats and using a long hook stick to take my coat down like they do at retail stores with clothes racked up high.

Could i make a mini attic? - would it be possible to have stairs that come down to then climb up into?

Do you have a floor plan? What's behind the right hand wall of the dead space? It does seem like a waste in a house that needs more storage?

I don't know whether your family enjoys watching the weather the way mine does. Often we will go sit on the porch and watch storms approach and enjoy the lightning show and thunder. I find that having a big window to watch the weather out of makes me appreciate being snug and warm on a cold winter day when the snow is falling. It is also nice to have deep windowsills I can place my plants on where they can get sun. If I don't have deep windowsills, I like to have a built in bookshelf or something under the windows to give me that space.

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

I'll keep looking at this but at first glance if you are ok getting rid of the bathroom, it would make sense to incorporate into bedroom 2. I would make it smaller (does it need a bath?) And I would enlarge the hot press to allow for more storage of bed linen etc. For bedrooms 3 and 4 it seems hard to fit in an ensuite for b4 without impinging on b3. So my suggestion would be to take space off bedroom 3 and do a small ensuite along the wall where they meet. I know this makes both smaller but by taking the door of b out to the end of the stairs you could move the door of the ensuite to the wall where the sink currently is and that might give more space in the bedroom but it does look tight for a double!

Our first house had this type of hallway. We built a large cupboard accessed from the bedroom behind/next to it and made it into a wardrobe. It was very handy in our new build with no storage haha! I'm afraid I don't have any photos though. All our walls were stud walls so it was fairly easy to knock through and the joiner put a floor across the stairway to create the base.
