Are Nobilia kitchens good quality?

I was going to go with a DIY Kitchen, but a new kitchen shop has opened up in our small town, stocking Nobilia range. I love the design of the kitchens, like the idea of buying locally and liked the people, and the price isn't that far off what I would pay if I bought from DIY Kitchens. I've just got cold feet that the quality wouldn't be that great. Some things I have noticed are 16mm carcasses (DIY are 18mm) and 2mm carcass backs (DIY are 8mm solid backs). The kitchens in the local showroom felt OK but I really have no idea what I should be looking at in terms of quality!
So can anyone reassure me that Nobilia kitchens are good enough quality, or would it have fallen to pieces a year or 2 down the line?

They're at the cheap end of german carcase manufacturing and are a high volume producer and equivalent to howdens or wickes(rigid) cabinets but with a few differences. Made from high density melamine faced chipboard that's 16mm, with a thicker front edge tape (cheap uk cabs have a thin 0.4mm edge tape) and good quality drawers and hinges, finish of cabinets and edging is to a good standard, all white internals (so no choice of matching to doors unless white) in the uk most carcases are offered in 5 colours and independants may have a choice of over a 100 colours and woodgrains, limited choice of door styles and with many doors made of a cut and edged melamine faced chipboard, a 2mm back panel thats stapled into a groove is rubbish IMO, the back panel is so important to the structural rigidity of a cabinet, if you have a flimsy panel thats been fitted in a slot then stapled the cabinet might be out of square before you start, an 18mm panel thats been cut square and kd blocked and screwed into a carcase (no groove required) will keep the cabinet square, overtime a 2mm panel will cup (especially on larders) and may pop out of the slots and come away (I used to do remedials for this for a well known national kitchen company).

Personally I'd shop around and speak to some local independants who supply 18mm carcases in a wide range of colours, opt for Blum soft close hinges and drawers (as the germans do) and depending on the door style that you're looking at I'm sure that they'll have something similar and they will be able to supply to the same kitchen design, some door companies have even more door sizes to choose from so you don't end up with large unsightly fillers. Even diy kitchens is limited to their door sizes compared to other manufacturers, ie their single oven towers have an unsightly filler over the oven where as other manufacturers have a 650 tall door, they also don't offer 715x196 and 715x546 wide doors for example.

ms1zebra, Thanks for your comment and interest! River-rock finished aluminum is a great surface. Its unfinished textured top allows for increased durability for work surfaces. It is resilient with heat, stains, oxidation, but will show signs of use if heavy objects are dropped on or slid across it or cutting is done on it with steel knives. Laminate wood flooring throughout? Yes or no

Hi Cherry, we went with the laminate throughout the house and it turned out absolutely stunning. To be honest it's such good quality I don't think of it as laminate and everyone who visits thinks it's solid wood. It won't look like laminate if it's a good quality brand and you use a thick underlay. Using it throughout the house makes the rooms flow and makes the spaces feel bigger. It's also really easy to maintain unlike shiny glossy tiles! Good luck!

We have had a wood floor in our kitchen for 13 yrs now, and we love it. Ours was finished on site, (more durable than engineered) with 3 coats of water based poly on it. It is just now that I am getting ready to recoat it. I have had both engineered and site finished hardwood,. The engineered didn't hold up as well, and we stripped off the finish and applied a new finish. It's more durable now. Finishing on site is more disruptive to your family and home, but it is worth it, because of the durability that comes with it. You won't be sorry at all about the hardwood. It is warm in the winter, and cool in the summer. In the kitchen especially, you have to clean up water, ice cubes, etc asap, and you have to be sure that you have a good dishwasher that doesn't leak (you don't have to put it under the entire dishwasher, just a few boards under the front and in the back). If there's a little water that you don't find immediately, and do later...ice maker leak,etc, in all likelihood, the grain will be raised, but in most cases, it will go down, and be okay. We love our hardwood floors, and hope that you will too. We have it all the way through our first floor, even in our powder room. It's terrific. I would never have tile in my common areas, it's cold and hard on your joints. We only have tile in our upstairs bathrooms. It's great there.
