Design Dilemma Kitchens

I'm playing around with some ideas for my new kitchen. The room (once the wall in the middle is gone) will be 5.2m wide x 7.2m long. I've mocked up an initial kitchen/dinner design + sofa (that's a nice to have as we have a separate lounge).

Trying to fit in an island, good sized induction hob, twin tall units with 2 ovens + coffee machine and microwave and built in fridge too along with at least an 8 seater dinning table. Plus trying to put in a walk in/corner larder unit but feel it may look out of place just placed where I have it at the moment in my design (the wall unit on the right is meant to be a small dresser for glasses/drinks/plates).

I think the space can take it all but just looking for any hints or tips on unit positioning or experience anyone has working with that kind of space.

Personally I think corner units look dated and you can have a two door pantry with similar storage without the worry that it sticks out.

The island looks undersized considering the size of the room, the hob in front of the window is undesirable and because the sofa has no focal point it seems redundant.

Personally I think you should be thinking about a different layout.

Hi Jon,

I'm afraid your design does need a rethink. I agree with @jonathan that the diagonal corners date a space really quickly, also looking at the back of the corner pantry will be really intimidating so keep those to corners if at all (I don't like them at all!).

Secondly, best practice says that the hob can't be in front of the window for safety. It was for blowing the flame out but I like to follow gas safety for all hobs.

I also agree the island is small for the room. I think stick to a L kitchen so you can fit a bigger one, or turn it so you've got more length to make a feature. With a table for 8, I would consider using a large kitchen table as my island. I love a table (if it suits the feel you're going for) as it's such a family hub and a great height for baking (mixing bowls are high) and cooking with kids. This will then give you the chill out end of your room that doesn't involve watching TV over the table!

I'm trying to do the impossible and decide on a Kitchen design for a very narrow Kitchen. 170cm wide and 375 cm long with 2 doors, a window, a boiler and a radiator to take into account! I'm thinking of one wall with 40cm depth units and on the other wall 60cm depth units leaving a 70cm galley space. Is this completely unworkable? I know it will be awkward but am willing to put up with that for the storage and counter space, my concern is that 70cm is just to narrow a space to be feasible. This is a house for 2 people max.

Hi, We're looking for some design options for a house we are planning to buy. We love the house location but the kitchen \ living area is proving to be a bit of a dilemma. There is a lot of glass in the kitchen area with full length windows to the front and rear which limits the options for layouts. We had a kitchen design prepared but are unsure if this really makes the best use of the space - it includes a corner dining area which while using the space feels a bit cramped for a family of 5. Due to the door position into the kitchen the builders design looks odd as they have placed the kitchen table right in line of sight of the front door so placing the table there seems a no no. We want to have an island in the kitchen ( its plumbed etc for one ) which we can have up to 5 high seats around which is in the design. We would like to have a TV in the room ( again limited places to put one on the walls due to the glass ) and would like some suggestions on layouts there also ( maybe the TV has to go ! ) - without something that completely blocks the access to the rear doors. Any thoughts gratefully received !

Hi All, Hoping to build a new house this year and to me the Kitchen is the most important part.I spend all my time there and love cooking. I've always dreamed of having a pantry that i could just walk into and see all my ingredients so that was a must. All the kitchens I've seen have lots of cabinets but i always end up taking everything out and leaving it on a counter so I want my kitchen to appear clutterless and have all my bits and pieces on show in the hidden pantry! I also wanted an island with a sink and dishwasher in it so when i was cleaning i could have full view of the kitchen and nowhere near the backdoor traffic! I don't mind my hob being against a wall as I find most my time is spent on prep beside a sink! I also wanted stools at a heightened part of that island so others could sit and talk to me but not be on the same level. However now I'm worried that I won't have room for a large fridge and freezer which is important as its a rural location so I'll be stocking food. Also was hoping to get advice on how to select a kitchen supplier? Any ideas are welcome as I'm still in the planning process and want to have all my plumbing and electrical points in place when i go to builders and tradesmen!
