Cast Iron Fireplace Bedroom Refurb

I am going to paint this all black but wondered what lurks behind this board? Should I investigate or is this like this for a reason?
N/B wallpaper was there when we moved in and we've yet to change.

    Definitely check behind the board, the original insert might still be there. Sadly ours were all ripped out but you may have better luck!

    My mum had similar fireplaces in all the bedrooms. My brother removed the boarding and the fire grate was missing. Mum didn’t mind as they decorative only and she was happy with that. He got the chimneys swept and painted the cast iron surround black. It looked lovely.
