When is it ok to paint new plaster?

Hi everyone, I keep hearing conflicting information regarding painting a freshly plastered wall.
Some people say as soon as the plaster goes light, which could be as soon as a couple of days. Then at the other end of the spectrum some people say 6 weeks! Plus a load of random in-between timeframes suggested by other people.
My plastering was finished at the weekend (Sep 18th), there's no heating in the house, but the weather has been warm (I'm in the South East of the UK).
Any ideas on when it is safe to paint it? Thanks guys.

It depends on what’s been done. Most likely it’s a thin layer to tidy an uneven wall and thin layers dry quickly. So as soon as it looks dry it actually is and can be painted. With any plaster there is the danger it will later crack in which case it just needs redecorating.

Don’t forget to mist coat at the beginning

From my experience, it can be painted as soon as it has dried. I've had new stud walls built and plastered and the decorator painted them firstly with watered down emulsion, let them dry and then painted them with the rest of the walls in the room and they all look the same now.

I agree with everything said so far. Would suggest you get built in book shelvers on both sides of fireplace, lift tv into a slot it fits perfectly into (make sure you have power on both sides). Then it will disappear more rather than fight with fireplace as focal point. I am always disappointed with mirrors over fireplaces, they become dark, are to high to reflect much. Plus then you have three rectangles fighting for center stage. I'd say very colorful artwork instead. Wonder if you can reorient tv where the big chairs are so both tv and fireplace are addressed? Color, maybe you should decide on furniture first?

Melissa, when I said footboard, I meant this. It has a portion of the bed that extends beyond the mattress edge. You posted a bed that had something at the foot section of the bed. By platform, I mean a bed that has a hard area and only a mattress on it. Like this. It does not extend beyond the edge of the mattress, but does not have a box spring. It is also lower to the ground. The picture you posted was a high profile bed and box spring. It was not on a typical bed frame. A standard bed frame, used with box spring and mattress looks like this. Virtually invisible and does not extend out beyond the mattress/box spring set. That being said, I'd recommend you get a headboard that is not too big for your space. Neither in height or depth (distance from the wall). I would also not get a mattress frame that extends beyond the size of the mattress. Sorry to have not been clear before.

Hi Marie. It's difficult to tell how wide the room is but a round table could work at the foot of the stairs. Dress with a large bowl and plants/flowers etc. you could also try hanging 3 chandeliers or pendants down the hall. I would also have either 2 matching consoles opposite each other by the front door or keep your existing and add some seating opposite to create symmetry. I think if you were to dress the console with bigger items it would stand out more ie ginger jars on the bottom shelf, classic urns, plants etc on the top. Once you've got the basics done and budget permits, you can add further floor standing decorative pieces, a small chair etc. I think you definitely need some tall art by the front door though or even mirrors if you're not keen to add art

Dear,

Keep it simple.

1. Light pink colour of your new plaster means you can paint a mist coat, and follow with finish coats (with preparation in between).

After you saw the wet brown-pink plaster you can definitely say when it's dry. It dries in patches and so after 2-3 days it should look evenly light pink.

Plaster dries depending on its thickness and the environment:

- if you skim plaster over plasterboard in a warm dry room it dries quickly;

- but if you plaster on bricks, during cold wet winter then its much thicker job on bonding and plastering and so drying could take 7-12 days (or longer).

2. Paint the new plaster the next day (whether wet or dry) with special paint designed for wet plaster. You must wait until the plaster dries out before you apply finish coats, otherwise stain patches will appear in places where it didn't dried completely.

3. Wait for 6 weeks before painting new plaster after damp proofing was carried out.

My stepson is a plasterer and he starts to paint as soon as plaster has gone pale pink and feels dry.
