Removing asbestos - Is it me?

I am in the process of re-roofing my garage which currently has a corrugated asbestos roof.

The builder (who is very old school) wants to chop into the sheet in order to be able to carry on work until I can get the garage emptied and the contents no longer need weather protection from the roof.

I am worried about this because of the well publicised issues with asbestos dust. I would rather remove the sheets whole and plastic wrap them in accordance with the acceptance criteria published by the local recycling centre.

Should I accept the advice of the buidler (who is doing much of this work as a favour) or risk upsetting him by sticking to my guns and making him wait until I can take the sheets off whole? (He's already accusing me of going overboard on this, but I really want to do this properly and not get into trouble by not taking the risks seriously.)

Thanks any one especially who can offer professional advice on this.

It's OK, the builder knows what he's doing. Let him crack on.

Don't chop into the sheet. Remove whole and "do it right".

If it's asbestos then absolutely have it dealt with properly and no way should you agree to have it cut up. Please don't let your builder compromise your safety and his. You can find out more on the HSE website. It's nasty stuff. Good luck. Angie

It only takes a few bits of dust getting into the lungs to cause problems in the future. There are companies who specialise in removing asbestos safely. I’d go with one of them.

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! Given the wooden window frames, consider roman shades or woven wood roll up shades. I would not add too much white since three of your walls, your baseboard and your crowne molding are already white, not to mention your bedframe (great bed by the way). Having said that, white night stands would be good, but suggest something other than white lamps, although white lamp shades would work. You mentioned Ikea. They have some great fabrics, bedcovers and lamps/lampshades. Ikea also has various window treatments, including roman type shades. They also sell a sliding panel system that is awesome if you see a color that works. It comes in various colors and would really add some life to the room. The panels slide on a rail system, allowing you to close and open them as desired. Agree it would be nice to pull the colors together with fabric that has both the green and the blue, either with the bedcover, pillows or window coverings. Also like the suggestion to try several small items over the bed (doesn't have to be pictures). The example picture shows three pictures of the same size. Two smaller items with one large in the middle also works well and might be a better fit with your square shaped bedframe. FYI, the lamps in the photo with the three pictures over the bed are really a bit small for that room. Notice in the picture of your bed, the lamps are much taller. Either tall lamps or lamps with a fairly large scale would be a good match to your bedframe. I would hold off on the ceiling light fixture until you have the bed in the room and have chosen your lamps, window treatments and other furniture. With all of these elements in the room, you will have an easier time chosing a ceiling fixture that matches the scale of the room and matches the style of your other furnishings. You have a great start going. Good luck with the finishing touches.

I would paint the room white and wall behind bed the same color pink that is in chair and then add prints above headboard and a large piece of art on wall on the right. Change pillows on chair and bed to modern and vibrant colors in grey/pink and yellow and add a coverlette to bottom. Purchase larger lamp for table on right and remove lamp from left side of bed and place a tray and some books on the ottoman. Move carpet to beside the bed. White roman blinds and painting the door white would be a good idea and just ask at paint store what needs to be done to prime, etc. Adding a fun chandelier is also an idea. Hi snan - to address your questions: 1 - yes, the lamps work very well. With regard to the height of the larger lamps: do you know how high they would be? If the bottom of the lampshade is even with the top of the pillows that should work. If they are taller than that I think you will be okay with the smaller lamps. Look back again at some of the pictures above to see what I mean. The thing that will look odd would be if the top of the lamps were taller than your headboard. The idea is that when you are in bed reading a book that you want the light to be able to reflect down. As far as the lampshade size goes on the smaller lamps I'm thinking the shorter ones since they don't seem to drop down as far as the larger ones. 2 & 3-Definitely chair by the mirrored bedside locker with one white locker on the other side. Without question. The chair to the left of the bed gave the room life. Use the extra white one in a closet or another room. You don't want to overcrowd your room when you are going for a tranquil setting. 4-Absolutely okay to have bedside tables that don't match and look good in the room. Whether or not you like that is a personal preference though. I would only put the mirrored one next to the bed though if you have the chair next to it. It's how they play off each other that makes it work. If you don't keep the chair next to the bed then I would use both white tables beside the bed. It is also fine that the pictures are off-centre to the wall as long as they are centered to the bed. :)

Under no circumstances should the asbestos be touched by anyone unless it is an approved asbestos removal contractor. Asbestos is dangerous when disturbed and has a latency period, so if come into contact with it, it can cause mesothelioma (cancer) in later years. I am shocked at what your builder has suggested - don’t let him touch it!

Your builder is insane. Get the experts in as it is in fact your legal duty to do so. Also, if he is willing to take risks here, I wouldn’t trust him to do it safely.
