Garden help pleas: how to make a maintenance free garden on a budget?

In low spots put in some drains [http://www.homedepot.com/p/Tuf-Tite-16-in-2-Hole-Drain-Sump-with-Grate-and-Seals-2HDS-4/203463511] with pipe running to the French drain. You might also need to bring in 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise your yard a bit as you're probably right at the water table level. We've had to do all this as we live in the Pacific Northwest in a reclaimed marsh [a nice word for a swamp] where we hit the water table if we dig down 3". We had to put down about 10 yards of top soil along with some sand to raise our back yard. We also dug a French drain along the back to connect to the associations drainage pipes through the neighborhood. My husband has put in at least 3 of the drains in strategic locations around the yard to help drain off the excess water. Our yard isn't perfect, but it isn't the swamp it was the first couple of years we were here. We have to apply moss killer every spring or it takes over the yard. My husband also puts down lime to soften the soil, and help the water drain easier. He and a friend rent an aerator every summer and do both our yards to help with the drainage as well....See MoreNeed help finishing garden

Comments (5)Hi ! I think this house will benefit from from plenty of toy storage in the main family living space ( assuming this will be in the extension at rear ) as while little ones are so small they need to be in view - so perhaps you could design with this in mind and add a dedicated laundry room near the WC perhaps ? The current play room could maybe be used as a different function ? Do you need a guest room /study perhaps ? For when family members come to stay ? If so maybe the wc could be upgraded to a shower room ? There's lots of things you can do to make this work for you - just write a list of what could make your life easier now and for the next 5-10 years or so ... Some things will evolve or be ready to change by then - so being clever with your designing and planning now should put you in a good place further down the line too !! If this is something you need help with - hiring in a pro might be a good way of dealing with it - or alternatively put your wish list on here and see if you can get some fab ideas from the helpful Houzzers !!!...See MoreSmall Garden Ideas
Comments (0)Hi all, Looking for a few ideas on what to plant in different areas of a small garden. The first photo shows the front, the bed near the window gets a lot of sun in both winter and summer. I did plant wild flower seeds here last September but it was a bit late so only have the below. As it gets the sun I would like to plant flowers that would attract bees........any ideas? Also looking to plant 2 or 3 plants down the side of the fence........what would be recommendations? The bed by the wall doesn't really any sun during the winter and a bit in the summer. Was thinking the tree as there and adding a cherry blossom in the middle or maybe a bit closer to the gate. Good idea? The second photo shows the back, the plan was/is to put decking over half the grass and plants in the bed. What would you recommend for this bed? It gets no sunshine in winter but gets a lot from end of April to start of Sept. The third one shows another bed at the back that again only gets sunshine in the summer. Again what would be the recommendation here? And finally looking for somewhere in Ireland I can buy all of the recommendations online?? Loads of questions for any budding landscaper!! :-)...See MoreThe Rooted Concept Garden Designs
