Switches and sockets

My electrician has just asked me what colour plug sockets and light switches I want for the work they are doing. The new kitchen is black and walnut with dark floor tiles too so I'm trying to keep everything else as light as possible. All walls, ceiling and recessed lighting will be white to try and make the space look brighter. I'm very tempted to go for white sockets as I don't want the eye to be drawn to them. But is white totally old fashioned? My kitchen is very modern. Should I go for black sockets to match? The island has a black pop up socket in black but I don't suppose that means I have to do black everywhere? Any advice would be great. Thanks.

I'd go with whatever is closest match to your walls eg if it's white walls/splashback then I'd go for white. Sockets/ switches shouldn't be seen in my opinion.

I think you need to consider what socket colour will look right in different rooms. They need to flow. For me I wouldn’t want a different colour socket in just one room. White is a nice neutral colour. I would aim for the same colour in each room.

It's tough without photos or plans. I prefer to put outlets in the baseboards they are unobtrusive when not in use. Make sure switches are closer to door frames and not in the middle of a small space of wall. For a floor outlet. Lay out how you would have furniture in the room and plan floor outlets to be under a chair or sofa. Be sure to have switched outlets in areas where you may want a lamp to be turned on easily. Dimmers everywhere. Think where you would want switched lighting. Think about how you would use the entire space...where you would have furniture, electronics, lamp lights. Be sure to have outlets for a major electronic bank (such as TV etc.) (computers, printers, other electronics) in these areas, be sure they are on a separate circuits and nothing else is on these circuits. Put yourself in the house with all its furnishings and see how it all works...this is how it makes it all easier. Be sure cold air returns are not in the middle of ceilings or walls in major rooms, try to have them located to unobtrusive areas (halls & walkways & between spaces). Don't let them tell you they cannot. We designed our home, did the entire electrical plan, and we were the general contractor. Because we planned so well the process went smoothly. And we never had a "why didn't I think to do something different" moment.

It looks very good James. Even though as you say it was a clients design build, it works fine. Once the Island has stools it will fill it out better. Has that naked look at the moment. The position of the wine rack might cause issues but overall it looks like a really clean and fresh kitchen. Plenty of natural light and the colours compliment each other. The extractor is a nice feature too. Everyone has different opinions as I see on here but if the client is happy with it then job done. Looks really well fitted too.....well done :)

Hi, I am building my house and have seen really nice and somewhat expensive light switches. Now I cannot afford matching plug sockets but was wondering if it mattered? IE, copper type switches and a more standard white plug sockets? Thanks

Hi - I am getting a new kitchen fitted - there are almost 10 plug points on the wall - kitchen is small in an open plan. some of the points are the isolation switches (fridge, cooker etc) - I would prefer these not to be shown. the walls are being painted. The kitchen is being fitted next week and the plug points are not part of this - these are by the electrican. can I do anything at this stage so not all the points are shown (the isolation ones) -a ll help much appreciated. White. In my opinion they only look old fashioned it they have very sharp square angles, MK do a nice White with slight angle on top.

I remember my son renovating his home. It was a dump when he purchased it so it was done from scratch. He left me and his dad to plan and sort everything and the only thing he was strict on was having white MK sockets. Weird boy 😂
