Red Mosaic tiles

I’ve recently moved to a new apartment and the kitchen has a 12” border of bright red mosaic tiles which I’m not keen on Any ideas how to change them without removing them? - looks like the kitchen has recently been decorated so don’t really want to be wasteful

Tackling the problem differently might be the better option. The wall's magnolia and the mosaic tiles are red and the bottom tiles are white and my guess is the floor is also a different colour.

Rather than being transfixed on the tiles in this particular corner, I suggest you look at all the white space first.

I have the impression that there's a blank canvas that needs to be finished to fit in with the tiles.

The wallpaper has the same colour as lining paper and I wouldn't be surprised if it was.

Unfortunately the holiday sales have finished.

But, wallpaper samples are free.

Look in the wallpaper section under kitchens and pick samples with red in the pattern. Get the shade of red as close as possible to the tiles but with patterns. Get samples with sage if you must but as long as there's the same shade of red.

This usually takes time, but with the help of the internet there's hope.

I'd also find the mosaic tile supplier to get a sample of the mosaic tile for reference.

Thank you for your suggestions and ideas! I love some of the more daring/colourful ideas, but I don't think I'm, personally, bold enough to go with such a contemporary look. I'm going to stick to a traditional/modern style and use large (4" x 8") white subway tiles and dark grey grout. I'm thinking of using a dark grey paint around the kitchen walls and then a lighter shade around the rest of the room, with maybe the dark grey on the wall behind the TV too. Will be a few more weeks before that's all done, but I'll post a picture when I eventually get there. Thanks again!

We are thinking maybe a terazzo tile of some sort- one that integrates the red, black and white, and beige (from the wood floors adjacent). This could pull it all together, for one cohesive room! See images.

Hi! What was your final decision? I am also working on my tiny WC and came to the following conclusions (after 2 months spent in tile shops, looking through houzz and pinterest photos). The tiles in small spaces: 1. Should reflect. The space should not be matt and absorb the light. The glazed tile reflects the objects like a mirror and creates depth. 2. Should not be oversized. When you like the big tiles on the photo you posted - just adore them at the picture. they will not go to a tine space. Compare the size of the bathroom and the size of the tile. Try to imagine the pattern. 3. Don't be mislead by professional designs and photos (like the ones you posted and you like). Most of them are the bathrooms which are really huge in size. So the tiles that are on the picture will not go for your project. You want a small SPA oasis? Forget about concrete and metal look and all the things like that. I took a sample of concrete tile in my bath... really you feel uncomfortable, when you step on the concrete barefoot, Though I have floor heating , I wouldn't go barefoot. Its concrete!:))) Concrete is good for a big loft or industrial design, I think. 5. For a SPA - look I would opt either for the mosaic (which is classical for SPA, but be careful with that. May be monochromatic or achromatic) or wood optic tiles combined with warm white tones. 6. Much color in small bathrooms is not a good option. It is better to add it with accessories. Moreover you can change the look just by replacing your turqoise towels by grey ones. You can add dynamics only by choosing not a typical size of the white tile and making an interesting pattern. For example, for my tiny WC i have 25x75 cm tiles and will put them in a brick wall style. What I have chosen for my tiny WC is a wood optic (very light) tile for the floor and white tiles for the walls. They will cover the wall by 120 cm. The rest of the wall will be covered with wallpaper (navy blue or dark gray). Or may be just painted. Wish you good luck!

Hi there! We think a white grout is probably your best option here, if you don't want it to look too busy. This is one of our hexagon mosaic tile displays we have in the TileStyle showroom and we have used white grout for this. As you can see, the shape of the tile is still very much visible but it's still a more subtle look that's not too busy. you can get tile stickers which are easily removable although the red tiles look a lot better against the stone tiles than the yellow paint imo so you could paint the walls instead? large wooden chopping boards and vases of stems etc could also minimise the red

You can paint tiles but I’m not sure how hardwearing it is. I also wonder if you painted the wall above a soft sage green. Will it tone down the red? Or paint the walls a dirty pink maybe.

I painted my kitchen splashback as a temporary measure and it's still like that 10 years later!

It is very doable, it’s easy, the paints these days are amazing. And yes, I’d paint the wall too ;)

Paint them a colour that matches the lower tiles and then the walls a coordinating neutral.

I hated the navy tiles we inherited in our first flat’s shower some 17 years ago. I made them white using tile paint, and knowing my DIY, I expect I did a “good enough” job and paid “close enough” heed to the
Manufacturer’s instructions. Although I can’t say the end result was the same as replacement tiles, it made a huge difference to how I felt about the room.
