Design Dilemma Smaller Homes laundry room

powder room laundry dilemma

I would like to renovate the powder room and laundry without moving the toilet to the other side, as that’s the common wall. Any feasible solutions to design the laundry layout with enough storage..
I’m leaning towards stacked washing and dryer but now sure how to handle the side on the powder room door…

Hi there,

First of all do you really need that door their and then remove the sink from the corner. You then can have washing machine, dryer with a cabinet.

Could you move the doorway into the toilet to the right and extend the wall on the left to 600mm, ie the depth of a dryer or w/machine so you could then have sink, w/machine and dryer in a line at ground level. Not sure how much space that would give to get in past the toilet. Or move the doorway slightly to the right as described and relocate the toilet so its back is to the family room?

HI -- gross635 -- Your right to some degree but you can't move the main floor bath to the other side because then that interfers with the floor plan on the second floor. Would not work . I would have loved to turn the whole plan around but it won't work in this case. Added note to what I posted before is to get rid of anywalls you don't need and also not every room has to have a door. Like the one on the lounge and the one at the end of the hall. I would open the lounge up by not having the walls on the entrance hall . As for a closet , there is space in front of the set back powder room for some coat hooks etc. I also question the fact of , if the lounge is really needed. Everything could have been shifted to the front and the kitchen set back , then that would have made a larger dining/familyroom area . But that would have ruined the resale value . So I think moving the bathrooms was the lest and best for this plan. One question I have , is this an English plan ?, because the English love putting doors on every room ?And usually the doors swing the wrong way.

It seems that 2 story houses are becoming much more the norm here. At least in the metro areas. People are wanting bigger houses and builders can get more house on less land. Mattresses, box springs and dressers have to be the WORST things to get up stairs ;-) I love the look of staircases and love the view a 2nd story provides. I'll tell ya though - we're not elderly (YET!) but I love not carrying laundry and other items up and down stairs ;-)

Just a quick note to thank you all for sharing your thought, ideas, experience and time. I especially want to thank Bluenan and decoenthusiaste for being with me through the all process for the last 6 months or so..., just wanted to post few photos of the results (https://www.houzz.com/discussions/any-ideas-for-final-touches-to-this-living-dinning-room-dsvw-vd~569586) as I feel it is not only me who created this space but it is your creations as much as mine. It may not be perfect or according to the the "Rules", but it is Me and my family. Each and every piece was chosen by me in different parts of the world and each one of them has a unique story behind. I am very pleased with my space. I love it! I am very blessed. .... and so I am off to my new project now... Back to school.... that's really going to be hard ;) Thank you all, once again.

Adding width BEHIND THE BED - with a headboard (which doesn't have to be a "headboard"; it could be fabric, collection of mirrors, collection of pictures, a farm gate!, small chairs or stools) across the entire width. Matching bedside tables/bookcases/chests/ with LAMPS - useful storage for extra books, extra bedding, etc. CURTAINS always warm up a room. People will always feel colder away from home - provide an extra blanket or duvet to add to the bed. I notice there is no WARDROBE. Not really necessary for overnight guests (provide hooks on the back of the door) but useful for storing your out-of-season coats, etc. There is plenty of room behind the door. Buy one on eBay and paint it to suit your colour scheme.

Sorry, if turning the toilet round, move the door to the toilet so it’s opposite the toilet and sliding towards the wall where the sink is, or opening out.

Sorry what I meant is that can't you get rid of the door that goes to the deck and close it from their with a wall.

Yep, lose the external door to deck and the door separating laundry from toilet. In UK a laundry is usually called a utility room, and one with a toilet is a lootility.
