Reluctant to remove attractive fireplace though living space is needed
Hello fellow Houzzers!
This is my first post so hope to get your views especially those of regular contributor ’rinked’ if at all possible!
We’ve decided to remove the chimney breast/fireplace to create a bigger living space (family of 5) and change the seated view from the neighbours fence to overlooking the garden (once sofas are moved to where the fireplace is currently located). This decision was based purely on space and on the awkward shape of the room which only gives us 1.5 walls to furnish. That being said, we appreciate that the fireplace is a handsome focal point of the room and it just seems such a shame to get rid of it.
Before we press ahead with our decision, does anyone have any magical suggestions that could twist our arm into keeping the fireplace?

Comments (9)HI -- gross635 -- Your right to some degree but you can't move the main floor bath to the other side because then that interfers with the floor plan on the second floor. Would not work . I would have loved to turn the whole plan around but it won't work in this case. Added note to what I posted before is to get rid of anywalls you don't need and also not every room has to have a door. Like the one on the lounge and the one at the end of the hall. I would open the lounge up by not having the walls on the entrance hall . As for a closet , there is space in front of the set back powder room for some coat hooks etc. I also question the fact of , if the lounge is really needed. Everything could have been shifted to the front and the kitchen set back , then that would have made a larger dining/familyroom area . But that would have ruined the resale value . So I think moving the bathrooms was the lest and best for this plan. One question I have , is this an English plan ?, because the English love putting doors on every room ?And usually the doors swing the wrong way....See MoreAny ideas for final touches to this living/dinning room?

Comments (22)I would go with what the architect suggested. That was my immediate thought and also means that you will get light into your living area all day since the kitchen would be at the front and the living room at the back. It will be a nicer space to live in. If you really can't face bedrooms at the front though could you do something like this? It clearly isn't to scale!! You probably sacrifice a bit of space in that smallest bedroom but gain much more liveable floor space at the front of the house. It also gives your husband the open pan area he likes. It does sacrifice a separate entrance way though. I'd also shift the bathroom wall out and steal some space from the utility room so that you have a larger bathroom....See MoreHelp with my living room

2 years agoCould you remove and preserve the fireplace before removing the chimney breast? Then it could go back onto the wall or anywhere else it might look good. Certainly a shame to lose it altogether. I removed the chimney breast but I still have a fireplace - see photo
What's the plan for that lovely archway which seems to connect to the chimney breast? Does it go all the way to the back wall and if not, are you going to extend it or make a bit of a wall there? That's another feature it would be a shame to lose!

@claircallan - kids are all under 10 atm and I like the idea of adding a window.
@jjcgn - we have tinkered with the idea of moving the entrance door but decided against it as it would be too close to the front door entrance.
@ruthB - I have also thought about removing and replacing but there isn’t anywhere else it can go..

Attaching the floor plan but will also attach extension plan for kitchen to give you a better idea of the space.

2 years agoWe are extending the kitchen and would love to hear any views on what style of windows we should choose. We know we’d like a large window feature but remain undecided on whether to go for bi-fold/sliding/timber 🤦🏻♀️

2 years agoHad some fun! Combine, be inspired, move around some more and so on.
Left: by moving the lounge door, you can change the 'seating arrangement'. Fancy term. Tv could go on the right of fireplace.
Middle: did some chopping in garage and loo.
Right: removed wall, full open plan, fireplace would stay, but be less visible.
