I'm not sure to add an island? Need more worktop space. After wanting a sofa in the kitchen the only one using it is the dog, pricey dog bed. Really need to make better use of space. Been in this new build a year and lost my way. Thanks for any advice.
An island is always much sought after but it may not solve your problem. Yes, will give you additional bench top space but to fit it with decent movement space around it you may have to lose the peninsula, and it's cupboards. Check to see if a decent island would fit by taping or templating a shape on the floor. I wonder if that is gaining anything?
So to gain bench space we possbly need to think about what's on the bench. If you are open to rejigging the upper cabinets, you might gain some storage for less frequently used items by going full height to the ceiling. In shifting contents around , you could get a microwave cabinet into the cabinet bank and emptying that corner.
There seem to be a few chopping boards around, a simple fix is to use a toast rack to store them. Or fossick around for a rack - someone has probably already designed one!
Am wondering if I see an electric toaster next to the stove? If so, is there any other place for it? Are your powerpoints in the right place for you? If it could go on the other side of the stove, with the kettle, and up against the wall it would give you the full width of the bench closer to the stove.
Another set of eyes helps see things in a new light! Hope my observations help.
I was looking again, and thought about the microwave - do you use this alot in your every day meals? Before redoing the whole upper cabinets we could use the other end of the bench further by going with microwave and toaster at the fridge end. I tend to move to my right in the kitchen so have my bench order as microwave, stove top, corner (with toaster right in the corner) then turn to the sink. Kettle is then on the other side of the sink with canisters, fruit bowl. (it all sounds very tidy, when I write it out like this!☺) The bench to the left of the microwave doesn't get used as prep area, bit for more incidental things, probably because the door hinges on the left side so it is ackward to get to the left. If your door opens against the wall you probably find you will naturally move in the direction of the stove . You might feel you are using more of your kitchen space and not just moving between the stove and the sink and you may think twice about the need to rework the space for an island.
I do use the microwave everyday but will try shuffling items around. I did consider moving the fridge opposite and maybe putting a unit there. Lot cheaper than an island. Thank you, I'll post when ive got it completed.🙂
