kitchen renovation advice for black AGA

Can someone please shed some light on what colours are best for a contemporary cottage style kitchen. I’m attaching pictures of the current space. I’m going to have a black 4 door Aga to go in the inglenook fireplace. I’m also attaching the vinyl oak that I’m having. However, I’m not sure if a black Aga with grey units (elephant breath) and this floor will match. I’ve looked at so many pictures that I’m now confused. Furthermore, I was thinking of a white marble worktop with light grey veins. Can someone please tell me if this will match. Any suggestions are welcomed as none of the colours have been finalised.

I'd say that elephants breath could be great, especially if the countertop is a similar color, but it needs some contrast. Antracite or offwhite units would do that. If the slate is just that bit around the fireplace, I'd pick a worktop that goes well with it, same grain/speckle. And perhaps complement with a wood top if there are multiple countertops.

I love rinked’s last picture, so off white units. I personally would choose white worktops as you have suggested as I feel a dark worktop would be light sapping, but that’s just my taste. It really makes the black aga shine.

Happy to help ! I'm only a short swim away in England !! I think if you want a truly opulent cream for the kitchen cabinets - I'd suggest you get a colour match for the range ! It looks a very creamy cream ! Think it could be stunning ! Then have slightly lighter walls and tiles to keep the room feeling light and airy ! If you have walnut stain for your worktop on your island , I'd suggest using that on your exposed legs if you go for the dipped paint look on the table and chairs ! Are you having the classic CC shaped island ?!?

fragle0 ... congratulations on the new addition to your family. Have been following your lovely changes. You probably won't have time to work on the decor for a while. Just wanted to suggest that you try pulling the nesting tables forward to be more in line with front of the chairs & placing your floor lamp to the back of them. This will give a bit more light at night for reading in that area.Also switching the plant by the fireplace & the one on the corner by the sofa.

This might sound a bit like being on the fence given the advice you've had already... How about a mid to dark grey ( less contrast than black), RAL 7022 is a favourite of mine (warmer grey), or look at a green grey, as something that will have the colour of the olive, with a good amount of contrast against the white render, (you won't have the warm rich colours of the brickwork as in the photos above (which the olive looks good against)). If you are painting the timber windows you would do well to look at microporous opaque stains to reduce your on-going maintenance. A benefit of aluclad composite windows is colour outside can be factory supplied different to the interior finish. Hope this might help. Regards, Nick

Hello Houzz Ireland, We are currently renovating a 1960's build - so as you know, there is a lot of decisions to be made!! So it would be nice to get some gems of advice from the experts to help us through this daunting task. Areas where we would really like some inspiration for - small bathroom downstairs. I would really like to do something fun with this room and although small, I think it could work really well with some funky wallpaper or possibly tiles?! I'm just not sure what to do with it. Also - pulling a whole house together?! Where do we start? We have the bigger pieces of furniture but how do I know what nest of tables goes best with a suite? Or what accessories will bring a room together? I'm due a second baby in 2 weeks time so any help at this stage would be so amazing - to guide me on the right interior design path for our new house. @ringed thank you for your message and for the pictures. I’ll be removing the flagstones from the fireplace. The aim is to apply a self levelling compound to the floor before adding vinyl throughout the space. I think this will be in within my skill set and materials should be fairly cheap. Some of the pictures you posted have slabs and I’ve noticed from my own research that people tend to go for lighter colour vinyls when combining with lighter countertops and black Aga’s. That created a massive dilemma in my head as I wasn’t too sure if a black aga with a black worktop would make the room feel small. @sonia - I think I’ll go for the white worktop option as I feel it will make the room slightly bigger. However, does that go with exposed bricks? I’ll probably keep the original soot to give the cottagy feel. The next dilemma would then be choosing in between black or chrome handles for the units but I think I’ll stick to chrome.

Moreover, I’ve another question for you guys. I’ve seen this picture with a rod and I think it could look ideal on the right hand side of the kitchen (against the wall with a rod). Do you know anyone that could supply that kind of think? Picture below for your reference. Also if you know any good light work top material it would be handy to know as I reckon it will have to have holes for the rod.

We used self leveling compound for our extension (office/craft room) and simply used a two component sealer on it (electrical heating mat in it), no need for vinyl. With that brick and wood I would certainly not use a marble effect top, but naturals such as sand, slate, warm grey, wood tones. Some bits of black or charcoal.

But if you want a white top, pick a more solid one that blends in with the white on the walls, use white upper units as well. Then you could pick a dark color for the undercounter units. And a rich brown on the floor, be it wood effect vinyl or tile.

A very good joiner who's built quite a lot of furniture for us uses Eggar products (laminates and worktop) of different thickness in his projects.
