Recycling granite work top, is it possible?

Hello, I am at the very early stages of looking at my options regarding a refurb of my 9 year old L-shaped kitchen. Currently my initial thought is just to replace all the doors as the white coating is starting to lift and add some wall cupboards, but wondered if anyone has been able to sell an existing counter top to help fund a more extensive refurbishment. I have added a picture from the original sales material. The measurements are the front edge on the left with the hob and oven measuring 1930mm and the sink section measuring 2005mm The work top is 610mm front to back with a 100mm upstand, the granite is 33mm thick. There is a seam in the corner, the sink is under mounted and there are grooves for draining. Thanks for any thoughts.

You can sell anything, people buy anything and everything. We sold our whole kitchen, but we were only looking for £500 for it and it was snapped up and picked up that day!

You can just replace doors if you are happy with the worktop/layout but if you are considering changing layout you might as well sell the lot

Hi Lisa, nice sofa. I had a red sofa for 10 years and loved it ( though mine was fabric) I've changed the kitchen/ living room and it stuck out like a sore thumb. I gave in and put in a grey leather sectional one and I must say it's much easier to decorate around. Are you in Ireland? Have you heard of the 1933 company, they have very nice suites. Red makes a big statement! Just my 2 cents worth, good luck!

Kitchen cabinets will look fantastic painted. The thing to consider when thinking about worktops is the work black granite creates - they show every little watermark, so need a lot of polishing. I discovered this when doing lots of experiments on granite samples! Other thing to bear in mind is granite is porous, so you have to be careful about staining the lighter coloured worktops and granite requires resealing after a few years. Because I'm quite lazy and didn't want any maintenance, plus we are a messy family, I went with Compac Quartz in white mirror, it's practically bomb proof and I haven't managed to stain it yet (3 years on). Comes in tons of colours.

Hi Mary, I'd say remove the wall tiles and replace them with a glass splashback the whole way round or have a matching granite upstand put in and simply paint the walls. Splashbacks are my favourite as they tend to add some light to the kitchen thanks to its reflective surface. Also another idea would be to play around with lighting, which is getting more and more popular in kitchens now, such as LEDs under your wall cabinets, on top of your cabinets or along the plinth. The added lighting just adds a little something special to the kitchen and more importantly it doesn't have to cost the earth either! Another lighting option could be to go with the industrial lighting craze right now and get something put right above the island which would really add character to the kitchen too! Marius

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.

That was the question, would anyone buy pre-cut granite is it worth the effort? The issue is taking out a kitchen is a messy business and propably more difficult if you are trying not to damage anything including me and my small flat! I have no idea at present what this size counter top would cost new or second hand so just posing the questions!

It’s worth a go! Facebook has selling pages such as Marketplace and I’ve sold several things on Gumtree which is free to advertise. It’s dead easy to use. There’s eBay of course. When trying to set a price I scan through the selling sites to gauge a price. Keep your price sensible.
