This is our main reception room, used mostly by the adults. We have not really decorated it since we built it. We just can’t seem to get the flow right, or pick colours, but have bought our furniture pieces which we need our decor to work around. Any ideas on colours for walls, how to fill the back wall behind the sofa. We want a modern look, simple and clean but makes a statement. The wall opposite the sofa is the tv, which can’t go, as the whole room was planned around it 👀. Any advice, tips, suggestions would be appreciated. We bought this coffee table but not sure if it should be the focal point or move it to the side! Thanks

I'd pull the sofa out from the wall by a good bit, always looks better not shoved against the wall.

I think a lamp at each end of sofa would look good.

If not enough room to do above, I'd put a long console/hidden shelves along back of sofa and put some art on it/ small Anglepoise lamps on.

Or plants in each corner, though It think your sofa doesn't leave much room either side.

What is the big space on right side of your 3rd pic for?

What about panelling? If you’re not into colour or artwork this could add architectural detail.

I agree Dytecture. Just got that for mucky boots, did the job. Will definitely look for something more stylish when we decide on colours.

There are several ways to visually widen a narrow hall and shorten a long hall. Floor: To widen a narrow hall use a diagonal floor treatment, e.g. stencil large diamond pattern on floor. To shorten the hall, use two or three runners to break up the length of floor rather than one long runner. Walls: Long walls can appear shorter by breaking up the horizontal lines.. This can be done by arranging pictures in groups rather than distributing them along the length of the wall. Hang a large painting, print or tapestry on the end wall or paint your door an accent color to create a feature. Another way to shorten a wall is create vertical sections on the wall. Trim can be used to create panels, groupings of art can create sections or large objects such as a mirror can define the segments. Directed lighting illuminating these section will also de-emphasize the length of walls. Ceiling: Minimize the visual impact of a long hall by bringing attention to the ceiling. One approach is to align the panel wall sections with ceiling panels or coffers. Or hang interesting pendant lights or a bold chandelier to redirect visual interest away from the walls.

I don't think panelling would work in this case as half the wall is hidden.

I think it’s the bare walls that make it look incomplete. A few large pictures will make all the difference. You can add colour this way such as blue, teal or pink. Is that 2 coffee tables, the brown one and the brass one?

All the existing colours seem to be just variations of brown, which is making the area look uninteresting. Change the cushions for more vibrant, contrasting colours, and what would make a great change is to paint the walls a different colour - a light purple, with cushions to match. There also seems to be an abundance of tables - the small one beside the sofa needs to go as it does not have a purpose, and the larger round table is somewhat lost. It also seems a shame to cover the windows with another table, which I would put over the other side in place of the carrier bags.

A large bright picture would also give focus to the room. Let us know how you are getting on please.
