Just bought a 1930s semi and on this chimney breast in the kitchen diner there is yellow patches. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I don't have a lot of money as I am only 20. It's my first home and I'm really hoping it's not something really serious.
It’s rising damp, it will need sorting because if left for years it will affect surround wood - but it won’t be the end of the world if you can’t do it right now it will just look unsightly.
See if the previous owner did some damp proofing and if it is covered by a guarantee (should be with all the paperwork from your solicitor).
