Hole in the wall!!

The previous owners made an opening in the wall between the reception rooms! Not sure why! We're looking to open it up down to the floor and put in pocket doors. It will need to come slightly as too wide at the moment. If we we're to cut the wall down would we need a structural engineer to check it first? If it was a load bearing wall would it make any difference if we turned the hole into a double doors? Thanks for any help!
