Hi. I think the overall look is good. Large tiles do make a room feel bigger as the pattern is less busy however I've seen the hex tiles in small bathrooms and they seem to work as your inspiration pic shows. I would probably lose the flowers though if I'm honest. Do you want the window for light or ventilation? Could a decent extractor be sufficient? I'm thinking that back ŵall could look quite busy. Is there any opportunity to change the layout? Moving soil pipes can be a little costly but could the sink be moved although ideally the loo would be hidden round the corner. You can pick up some great looking vintage or vintage style taps on ebay although unsure if the quality of the repro ones, If the layout can't be changed maybe have a corner loo and ŵall hung trough sink and put some storage in on the rhs as you come through the door depending on how you plan for the shower to open

hi All I am looking for guidance for a Plantation Shutter for this Bay Window. Here are the dimensions: 2070mm (W) x 1440mm (H) (Main) and 690mm x 1440mm (side windows) I am looking for advice on 1. How many Panels (Doors) do you think would look best on the main window/ sides? Window company strongly suggested 3 Panels and not 4 or more for main and 1 panel on each side. 2. Do you think Cafe Style is a bad choice - the window company advised me against it as they said people will still see in. As a compromise I am considering Tier & Tier (3 Panel) on their advice. My concern with going with what I was advised by the Blind Company ( Tier & Tier 3 Panel - with long panel on each side) are the following. a. When side Panels are open they will extend into room which I think might look odd. Would it be better to do 2 Doors/ panels? b. Will doing Tier & Tier only in centre and not on the side windows look strange? c. Given my dimensions, if I do Tier & Tier with 3 Panels/ Door, then each Panel is almost a square shape. I believe it will be 690 mm W x 720mm H. I would love any advice as the quote is pretty expensive which I don't mind if it looks amazing when done! The overall look when room is complete is a little retro, - I like the horizontal line of the blinds - I will probably not do the vertical opening/ closing feature at all. My aim is to not block too much light (west facing) and to open the blinds back to let sun in morning as I will have relaxing chair in the window area. Any tips, items to ask about would be very appreciated. Thanks!!

What to do with Fireplace Wall ??

Hi ! I am looking for some ideas for the end wall in an open plan kitchen/dining drop down sitting room area. The fireplace space can be brought down in height if necessary . I'm thinking some paneling with a built in fire place ...but I am open to any suggestions. Just put into perspective the width from window on left to wall on other side is 6.1 m. Thanks !

If kept as it is, how would you style the room? Sofa colours etc?

As wood is very neutral, and because it’s original panelling, I think you could do absolutely whatever you like, style wise. It’s like Victorian houses - if you have original period features, they will sit beautifully and authentically with any other style. But just some examples: the blues you have already complement the wood tones nicely, or you could go for a soft grey-green (or william Morris wallpaper) above the panelling, with dark green upholstery, or you could go full on roaring 20s early Art Deco, or glamorous
-yet-relaxed country house look (like The Pig or other country boutique hotels for example), or a very soft and relaxing look with warm neutrals and pinks, or 70s disco. It’s an amazing blank canvas. If I were you I’d have a good think about the mood you’d like to create in the room (and the house as a whole - have you recently moved in?), and consider the light and aspect etc, then take it from there.

If you want to keep the woodwork as is then...

Light creams and browns go well with dark panelling.

I would add a rug, change the sofa, change the dining chairs, change the blues to creams and browns. Lastly... plants. The plants will bring to room to life.

The panelling looks like it could come up to a lovely polished glow, it seems to be a little on the dull side. It might be worth investigating how to clean up and polish the wood. A testing an area might help help to decide if the rich wood work is really something you want to paint over when color on the walls and in the furniture could change the feel of the room entirely.

Although I love wood panelling and was horrified when our neighbours decided to paint 17th or 18th century oak panelling in a large bedroom cream, it looked fabulous when it was finished and gave the room a much gentler feel.

Please leave it alone, clean and polish and work more towards integrating the rest of the room.

There is no going back without tons of work and frustration.

I had the same dilemma, have left ours alone. I use 'Liquid Gold' to clean & nourish the wood. Think about what you need or want to keep & work off that as a base. Our panelling has a warmth to it & I've embraced that although have kept the carpet & sofas light. I think these shades work well with the wood tones (photo hasnt posted but let me know if you'd like to see it). If you like Arts & Crafts look but want a lighter, fresher style take a look at Morris & Co Pure collection.

If you decide to paint it a light colour 'Oyster' from Fenwick & Tillbrook is a fabulous, warm off white but do check for yourself by having a large painted swatch of it which you can move around the room at different times of day to see how the light affects the colour.

Definitely leave it alone and work on the rest. The cupboards below make it look a bit 'heavy' on the wall with the TV; perhaps remove the doors (depends on what's behind them, of course). To have painted 17th/18th century wood panelling is tantamount to a crime, as far as I'm concerned. As @peter carson says it's a huge amount of work to undo if you feel it was the wrong decision. If you sort out everything else and give the panelling some TLC, the room will thank you for it.

Thanks, I’m veering away from painting them as I feel I’d regret covering them up, they would be beautiful with bit of a spruce up. Out of interest is this something that I would need a professional to do?
Agree that the cupboards below look a bit clunky so will have a think of what we can do with them.

If it's a bright and light room then I would do the opposite of painting it dark and take advantage of the light. Painting it is not obliterating its beauty as the light will catch the different surfaces and angles, perhaps even more so than if it's dark. It's one of the reasons Farrow and Ball's paint sells so well, they rarely photograph colours on flat plain walls with no details, it's the mouldings that bring a colour to life.

I'd be more tempted to paint the beams on the ceiling and leave the panelling alone. Use light neutrals in the room for walls, caprpets/rugs with strong coloured accents and of course plants.

Kate, this is beautiful and it would be a pity to cover it in paint. I would get a restoration specialist in to bring it back to life. Love this with the lighter colours from arc3d’s pic.
