Best kitchen cabinet finish for long-lasting style?

Hello - we're looking for a new kitchen as part of a kitchen extension project but I'm having trouble finding independent advice on the pros and cons of different cabinet finishes. Love the look of the Devol cabinets (and really like the idea of being able to pick a bespoke colour) but am a bit worried that after a year's use by two children (and not-always-terribly-careful husband) it will be chipped. Love the look of the Naked kitchens too. - They describe the manufacturing process that apparently makes their painted finish durable - but is this any different to the Devol finish? Other companies I've looked at offer Fenix laminate (Husk), linoleum (Reform) and formica (Holte).

Hoping this will be a forever kitchen (for both sustainability and financial reasons) so looking for something that looks great - but will also hopefully still be looking great in 25 years time...

Hi Katy,

For a 25 year old kitchen, I would look at wooden and painted wooden doors. This means that when (not if) it gets damaged, you can fix it with a quick sand or a repaint. The only reason you replace a wooden kitchen is if you don't like the style any more.

The formica and Linoluem will be more durable to knocks and bumps but once it's damaged, there is no repairing it.

Fenix has great reviews about just applying heat and it self repairing but I've not seen it myself. It is a very different look to painted though so it depends on the feel of the room you are looking for.

I'm a completely independent kitchen designer so if you want to bouce some ideas around and get an honest opinion, rather than a sales pitch, I'm very happy to have a zoom call with a cup of tea for £65/hour or parts of, we can talk about which areas to save costs in, which bits to spend on, which appliances are good or over specced. Basically I can be an independent sounding board for you so you can be sure you're getting the best value for money and not being taken for a ride!

Hi catbox/emerald18 - your kitchen is absolutely stunning - I love it - mostly because your style is the same as mine - only the tiles I've chosen are Henley Cool from Topps Tiles (sage green/blue). I've also had a few moments of indecision but I've had a picture and sample of the tiles pinned up for months and I still love them. I'd chosen matt slab style kitchen door fronts but I might be convinced by your photo to change to Shaker. I am also going for the wood worktop but can't decide whether to have a Belfast sink or not. What sink did you choose? I also can't decide on a splashback, but like white painted brick + something more cleanable by the sink and hob. Once again, I love love love your kitchen - I'm pinning the photo of it up with my tiles picture in case I get future wobbles about my dream kitchen

A soft mossy or grey green would be my first impulse but Sarah's dark blue looks good. It depends on your kitchen ware. White porcelains will pop with the blue and earthy stoneware will go more with the soft greens. I'd add a shelf to extend from the cabinet across the tile and a pot rack or hooks over the stove.

A15) @Dara Cooke: If you can't afford a quartz or granite worktop from day one then I would recommend using a laminate worktop as a temporary solution. If you don't put tiles up as a backsplash then replacing the worktops can be relatively easy in a couple of years.
