Considering building a wall (no pun intended) along the left and right sides of the garden in this photo Left side Right side A similar type of brick to the ones used here The overall objective is brighten up the garden without trying to make it look too flashy. On the left side I'd like to plant Portuguese laurel for privacy and prevent overlooking from the adjoining property. The slide and swings in the photo have to go due to wear and will replace with a treehouse at the bottom of the garden beside the blue shed. The garden is approx. 20 metres long and 10 metres wide. Would really appreciate any design tips or potential pitfalls...

Hi there, We've recently refloored and painted our living room. I think it's very bland and want to introduce more colour, perhaps a deep teal on the fireplace wall or something. Im struggling with choosing units for the alcove. I hate the TV stand and was thinking of something built in, put the TV higher and mounted on the wall but I cant put one on the other side or I'll have nowhere for my Christmas tree or baby's chair, will it look odd with something on one side only? Any suggestions for wall hangings and rug or no rug! Thanks in advance!

I have assumed the stairs are for an apartment above so you also need to shield your garden from their entrance but even if the stairs lead to your home I think privacy is the most important requirement given your neighbours are all elevated.

So I would have a patio in the centre of the space with a pergola above it. I would also see if I could add height to the wall by adding fencing above. Then I would put paths from the central patio to a cushion store under the stairs, a path to the downstairs door, another path to the gate and likely a barbecue somewhere near the gate I would then fill in every gap with planting such as Sambucca, Cotinus, Choisya, prunus, fatsia japonica. I would try to choose different coloured leaves to add interest and I would then add clematis up each pergola upright and a couple of oversized pots.

Although this plan does not have a lawn to mow you will need to sweep leaves regularly and an outside tap would be useful too.

So your front door in on the first floor? What's on the ground floor? Is it a 3 storey house? Definitely need something with height like a pergola and/or a small tree. Good ideas from Jonathan 🙂

Great ideas from Jonathan. I’d certainly want fencing or planting to provide privacy. Pergola is a great idea. You might want to put something along the fence under the stairs in case next door has weeds which will grow through there all too easily. I wonder why the wall and fence are so low, and it may be a planning constraint which could limit your options, but adding natural screening should be achievable even so. Where possible I would recommend introducing curves into a small rectangular garden as it gives the illusion of space and adds interest. Good luck and have fun planning and planting!

@arc3d Thank you for your response, I think planting along the wall will be the best place to start too. Yes, it's a shared staircase with the duplex next door. @Jonathan Hi Jonathan, thank-you so much for your response, you've given us so much food for thought with great planting options as we want to make the space as vibrant as possible! Yes, the stairs lead to our duplex (1st and 2nd floor), the ground floor flat enters from the other side of the building and has their own garden on the other side too. (The design is based on the historic 'Edinburgh Colonies', I've attached a photo) Thanks again.

@Sarah L Hi Sarah, Thank you for you comments! I think a pergola or a small tree is a great idea to add privacy and think Jonathan's vision is good too.

Yes, our front door is on the first floor and it is a duplex where we have the first and second floor. On the ground floor are other flats but they access the building from the other side so they have their gardens on the other side too.

@Angie Hi Angie, thank you for you response! I too think that Jonathan's ideas and the Pergola might be a viable option! I also think bringing more curves and making the space as bright as possible will help too.

Yes, we will want to try and create as much privacy as possible but I do believe there are some restrictions in the title deeds that I will have to navigate so natural screening will likely be the best option. The design is based on the 'Edinburgh Colonies' which have always been very community-focused, so I guess the idea is to try and re-create the spirit of them in the 21st century (Likely, a very difficult task!) Interesting article. I’ve not heard of the colonies before. Will be interesting to see how well community develops in the new builds.

@arc3d @Jonathan @Sarah L @Angie and anyone else that may be reading this!

I've been messing around with Photoshop using a drone shot I took of the property a while back. This is the first draft of my overall design including;
- decking,
- bench,
- troughs around the perimeter of the wall and fence,
- triangular trough near the external stairs,
- stepping stones to the understair storage/decking area
- two potted trees, one either side of the gate.
I also plan to put Tressel on the wall behind the decking with a clematis or similar climbing on it. I'm also trying to figure out if the local planning regulation will allow for trellis to be put on the wall to a total height of about 1.5m.

Any feedback is welcome, this is just my first draft :)

Looks great!

Do you have kids, pets? Or if you're planning to then maybe consider future proofing too.

The large stepping stones cut right across the lawn? They become more of a feature than the lawn itself?

What about screening from the carpark? Maybe a pergola over the deck with some climbers?

Rather than have narrow flower beds along the wall, try to curve the edges so you have deeper areas for planting. It will make a big difference. And don’t forget about the top of your stairs. Could you attach some planters and grow vegetables or trailing flowers?

I agree with the suggestions to get some greenery in along the wall.

It will give some much needed privacy and soften the edges of the garden.
