Hi, we have time to furnish our place. When is the best time to buy furniture with sales? I don’t mind spending a bit on products, especially for things like sofa, dining table / chairs etc. - which shops to consider and when is the best time to visit the showrooms to avail their discounts? I don’t want to purchase online for anything over £1500 without trying it first. Thanks

I don’t blame you. Always best to try out sofas, in fact any seating, before you buy. The summer sales usually start August time, but with covid this may have changed this year.

There is a reason why you don't use them....you probably don't really like them. The style of the chair does not fit with a sunroom look. Put them up for sale and buy "lighter" furniture like a nice rattan set or maybe just a couple of long chaise to create a reading nook or a nice place to have coffee...

I agree with groveraxle, with a small caveat - if you're not very experienced with how paint colors change in different rooms with different light and so on, then I like to try out a couple of samples of colors I THINK I'm likely to want before I go shopping for furnishings/art/etc. (I just paint on thick card or something so I can move the sample around in the room and between rooms.) My reason for this is that it can be quite hard to make some color schemes work in some rooms and I don't want to be in love with a rug/piece of art/etc. and only find out once I try to decorate the room around it that the room itself is fighting me. (For example, my parents have a room which only gets REALLY warm natural light due to the angle of the sun when it hits the windows. So some colors look VERY different in there compared to elsewhere in the house.) For example - I have the idea I probably wanted my new bedroom to be some shade of gray. What I'm going to do is get some sample pots of gray paint that looks appealing to me and test them in the room. Some will probably appeal more than others in the room, so then I'll let those guide me in looking for other items - not trying to match the paint, but looking for a light cool gray versus a darker warm gray, that sort of thing. Then once I have the soft items selected I'll find the exact shade of paint I use from there. (Which might end up being the sample I already had, or might need a custom mix, etc.) I think if you're a designer or do this a lot you start getting a better idea of how rooms will influence colors and can just imagine it, so you don't need to do the first step as much. You can just look at a room and tell things are likely to read warm or cool or whatever.

Thanks Jeffrey, bluenan, yoboseiyo and dianahb. Our furniture is stacked up at the furniture restorer's, hence the odd pictures. I am going there tomorrow morning to work through the fabric samples, so I'll post a better picture then. Dianahb, I only know mohair as the wool type in throws etc. I searched on the site here and the pictures thrown up as mohair look like a velour finish to me - perhaps it's known under a different name here in Ireland. But I'm a novice so wouldn't know the names of various fabrics anyway ...! Bluenan, I like the chinoiserie idea but I think it's hard to find a pattern that would not fight with the chinoiserie handpainting on the sides and legs of the pieces. If we stripped the suite it would be much easier to upholster, but would lose some of its unique personality. Jeffrey, I love the silks idea and I will google the ones you mention and maybe try to track down equivalents here in Ireland.

There are permanent sales on. You just need to keep an eye open for them. Shops are desparate to sell.

We would recomend that you subscribe to the newsletters of brands that you are interested in. The shops always send info about any deals to their subscribers first. If you are searching for a solid wood dining table we are happy to help as well - we can talk discounts with our new subscribers ;-)
