Design Dilemma Before & After Kitchens

Quarry tiles/adhesive

Hi folks, found that we have quarry tiles beneath some yukky vinyl ones. Not sure what was used as adhesive but it is pretty impossible to chip away at. Are there tools or products I should be using? I think this may well become a labour of love 😊 Many thanks

Definitely a labour of love! Quarry tiles are still popular and available if you can’t get all the glue off you could replace them.

Thank you. I think the vinyl has been on for 30 years. Expecting a similar time frame to remove them 😀

If you have a red tile around you can take it to a paint store and have them color match it. Then go as light as they can, while keeping the same color tint.

Either could be laid- you would need to use different adhesives on the wood or concrete though. There isn't much difference between- I would look for a reputable supplier and not online though as the decent quality may not be there. Any tiles can be laid on a diagonal if your tiler is good enough! Jade

Hi @mjdpower, My suggestion is to go to a couple of floor specialist and ask as they may come up with something different. Whatever you do keep in consideration the size of the room and think on a long term: a poor quality finish could effect your property price in a space as important as the kitchen. I will try something that allow you to go back to your original tiles floor if things do not work out the way you want them to go. A cheap way is to cover the tiles with vinyl and here is how to do it: http://www.doityourself.com/stry/how-to-install-vinyl-flooring-over-ceramic-tiling#b the adhesive should not stain or damage the tiles (ask the manufacture before doing it anyway!) and you have a large choice of design and colours. Paint tiles could be another option, not my favourite but an option. I found this blog where Curry Kay describe step by step how she's did it. The tile is very pretty. I don't know if it is just the colours showing up differently on screen but the light grey appears to be a different tone (more purple to me) than your tile. If you want a light grey I would take the tile to the store and try for a better match. The dark color ties in nicely to the tile and could be very dramatic and stunning if the room gets a lot of light.
