Hall, stairs and landing decor

Hi all I’m back again with another project. I’m after some advice on the hall, stairs and landing. There isn’t a great deal of space but I’m hoping to maximise the space to its full potential. The skirting and door frames will be painted white and ideally I would like seating at the base of the stairs, so we can sit to put our shoes on (rather than using the stairs for this). Please share your ideas and suggestions.

The wallpaper will be removed and we haven’t decided on paper or wallpaper yet, we are completely open to suggestions on colours (no natural lighting), lighting etc. Thanks in advance 😊

A niche would be a good way to add some drama without infringing on your circulation space. It doesn't have to be deep to be effective. You can do one simple vertical rectangle, and line the back with a mirror, or add some colour with paint, wallcovering or wood. It would be great if you could also add a recessed light fixture at the top. The attached images are perhaps too busy for your situation, but it gives you a good idea of what can be done. Good luck!

I would try to find a carpet to make the darkest shade in the wallpaper pattern like a mushroom color. Cream white gets dirty and stairs are heavily trafficked.

I am a fan of black as a disappearing colour! If the tha bannisters were painted black the Victorian look of cast iron would fit. The walls are too pale , would you consider a dark green( FB Green Smoke) under the rail, next to the carpet, and a much lighter version above( FB Light Blue or Pale Powder). Not really sure of the shade of green in the carpet, it might be more FB Oval Room. I am fond of the Pugin look but realise it is powerful and invariably used with very dark paints. We changed our ginger brown stairs, over 3 storeys to white. 13 years later the effort was not only worth it but the pain has subsided too!

Narrow and dark. If you can add metallic paint or wallpaper or even mirror on one side you can visually open up the narrowness so it doesn't feel so long and straight. Paint is easier to remove but some wallpapers add great depth which also serve to widen a narrow hallway. Be sure to consider lighting as well. Are you planning to paint the doors themselves? They look like nice oak doors. And are you wedded to white for the woodwork? It can be lovely to have darker woodwork and paler walls.

If you will be keeping the Oak doors then i wouldn’t paint the architrave and skirting in white. I would leave them in the Oak finish. It’s easier maintenance and then you will end up going through the rest of the house doing the same creating yourself more work.

Take a look a Cromarty. It’s a Farrow & Ball colour but you can match it from other cheaper suppliers such as Johnstones. It’s a lovely light green that’s not overpowering and looks lovely contrasting against Oak woodwork.

Regarding a shoe box I’d be a bit cautious of taking up space near to the bottom of the stairs. I always worry about anyone slipping down stairs and falling into it.

Thanks @hedgehog99 and @daisy England. We shall be keeping the oak doors as they are as we like the oak colour. We have already shifted from oak skirting/architraves to white in some bedrooms and the living room and we plan to paint all skirting and architraves throughout the house white. I will take a look at Cromarty, thanks! I know what you mean about losing space at the bottom of the stairs but it would be nice to have some sort of seating area, maybe a stool would be better or a chair with legs so it’s not too overpowering? Any ideas or tips for decor once the space in painted? I want it to look spacious and bright.

Hello, we agree Cromarty is a lovely colour! Perhaps you could find a small bench that could also act as shoe storage for the bottom of the stairs (space allowing). There are lots of lovely ones with cushion tops. In order to create a bright space we recommend pendants in a glass finish to allow light to flood the space and use mirrors!
