Painting woodwork in a dark hall

We live in an old traditional farmhouse, over the years we have made improvements & decorated. I have always been told it would be sacrilege to paint the wood work in the hall...but it is such a dark space... and I’m really tempted to paint the doors, surrounds & skirting boards but to leave the actual stair case as it is rather special... what are peoples thoughts...?
